My new HP ZV5034...

Hi everyone,

I'm new here (first post) and also fairly new to laptops, but learning fast...

Been shopping around and have now stuck my neck out by buying
the just-out HP model ZV5034. (Should I be saying 'oops'?) Maybe being new, I'm too over-awed by the newness and sex appeal of this thing compared to my old Sony AMD K6-II...

Got what seems like a really good deal, as it was a recent demo with 10% off, plus $400 in rebates. But I am fully ready to return it within the 2 week refund period if it doesn't shape up. Hoping you guys can help me with a few questions...

Previously, I was looking at the new 17" model from Micro Express with the 7200rpm HD. Though it was a stretch budget-wise, I could go back to that if the HP turns out to be too limited. What drawbacks can I expect from the HP? (OK, they are a 'conservative' company, and I have read negative reviews of their computers and service, though I've had great experience with their test equipment for years).

So far, the HP's 'glaring faults' would seem to be (am I right on this?):

1/ Slow (4200 rpm) hard drive, as opposed to say, the Micro Express' 60GB 7200rpm Fujitsu(?) HD.
2/ Shared video memory used on HPs(?)
3/ Questionable quality (Made in China, etc.)? (not sure, this remains to be seen on mine as it seems solid...)

Oh, another thing: System Properties says there's only 384 MB of RAM, whereas the machine's supposed to come with 512 MB. The Best Buy salesman says that this is because of the shared video memory! Is he ****tin' me? It would be easy for someone to have pulled a memory module on a display laptop...

BTW, I want this machine to do multitrack pro-audio, flight sims, games, DVD-watching, and photo editing, and I want to avoid future 'upgrade shopping' for as long as possible.

Thanks for any advice, and best of luck!

Just my opinion...
- must be a really new model because it's not even showing up in searches, google or at HP
- from my past experience, I have found that purchasing demo models of anything is usually not a good idea, lest you're paying next to nothing after your 10% off & rebates
- recently, I've heard many positive comments re: HP tech support and HP lappys
- the slow 4200rpm HD is not an "HP" thing - as HP has plenty models w/5400 and 7200rpm drives
- Shared video also not an "HP" thing - just a spec on your particular model
- Shared video not the best spec to choose if you plan to game and/or do photo editing
- maybe you were awed by the price you could get the system for - you should instead be awed by the specs the systems has
- your system should meet your needs
- not the needs of your "Best Buy" salesman
- perhaps if you posted the specs of this system, others would have more info to go by in helping you

The reason your memory seems "low" is that, as the salesman stated, it has shared graphics.

Hi guys - thanks for your advice so far. Yes, the machine is very new, and so an unknown quantity thus far. Now and then I'm picking up on a bit of feedback on the various laptop sites, but mainly people just have more questions about it... I guess somebody (me) had to bite the bullet...

Anyhow, here are the specs:

15.4" WXGA Wide Viewing Angle TFT display, 1280 x 800 res.
Intel Pentium 4 2.66GHz cpu;
Cache memory: 512MB level 2;
Bus speed: 333MHz;
RAM supplied: 512MB DDR SDRAM, expandable to 2.0GB;
60GB (4200rpm) EIDE HD;
Windows XP Pro installed;
24x10x24x8 DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive;
ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 IGP w/ 128MB DDR video memory, S-video TV-out;
54g wireless LAN (802.11g); integrated 10/100 Ethernet LAN w/ RJ-45 connector;
V.90/V.92 high-speed modem;
One 1394 port (4-pin) and three high-speed USB 2.0 ports;
Built in 5 in 1 digital media reader;
Weight: 7.9 lbs;
Size: 11.59 x 14.25 x 1.8"

Yeah 88, I'll admit the price/hardware ratio is what got me in, but as I said, I'm not so taken that I wouldn't trade it for a nicer laptop, even if I had to pay more. Normally I wouldn't have bought a 'demo' either, but I could tell that this one was really 'just out of the box'... This one will have cost me 'only' $1200 after rebates, including CA sales tax.

BTW, jman - yes I checked under System Information and do indeed have the stated 512 MB of RAM. (Shame on me for doubting the honesty of Best Buy's sales staff!)

Cheers,
Dave

lol regarding the Best Buy salespeople, as they're not on commission, I'd actually blame lack of product knowledge or apathy regarding recommending incorrect products or unnecessary items.

What Best Buy really sells is Product Service/Replacement Plans, accessories and MSN subscriptions... lol

Well I just hope they don't mind returned items 'cause that's what I'm thinking of doing... The emachines 64-bit Athlon with ATI 9600 looks pretty good, and the IRQs all made much more sense than on any other laptop I've seen so far - FireWire port, Cardbus, Video card all had their own IRQ address, and only the USB ports shared one IRQ together. I'm gonna check their website now and try and see what speed the hard drive is...
