Speed, Fans and the Horror

I was rendering an Adobe Encore DVD process the other day, and the thing took five hours before it crashed. Ive had speed issues with my Sager 4080 3.2Ghz 1GB ram earlier, but this was ridiculous. Having streamlined my system including the MS Services and vaccuumed the fans with (ir)regular intervals, I found there had to be something else wrong. Not to mention that the fans are more noisy now than they ever were. I vaccuumed the fans just last week, but that didnt help much.

So let me dismantle the machine until i find it.

So far so good. I didnt manage to find out how to access the fan directly, but via the heatsink should maybe work. It was tricky to get loose, but give it a firm push and itll come.

I wonder what that filter is doing there? MY GOD, ITS NOT A FILTER, ITS TWO YEARS WORTH OF DUST.

Exhibit A. The dust filter.

Exhibit B. Cleaning the fan walls. Disgusting.

Back in business again. Puh. Smooth and cool. Im sure some of you will say you get what you deserve, but I hope this will help some who didnt think they had to physically remove the heatsink to get to the problem. At least in my Sager model.

Yeah those should be cleaned every five or six months I think, at least.

Definitely worth it if you're going to want your unit clean and running a long time.

Cleaning your "unit" is always a good idea

What dust infested place are you living in? Thats a insane ammount of dust. I've had my laptop for 18 months and there has never been any build up, so has been no reason to clean it..... yet.

Routine maintenance is always a good idea, clean or not.

at least there are no spider webs ....

or dead spiders

Wow. Now that's a dustball.

You should see the sh-t that comes out of the laptops out here. User's aren't PMCSing them at all and they wonder why they overheat....

The dust is so bad that I blow my personal XPS out everyday.

True, the laptop has been around, but never used outside. Anyway, the point was the a mere vaccuuming will not do the trick. Have to dismantle. But I agree its pretty perverse.

Depends on a couple of different things. Location of where you work/live. indoor/outdoor animals. I have three indoor dogs and they seem to bring in huge amounts of dust. I dust my house at least once a week and go through about 5 of the little swiffer duster heads. I take my desktop out to the garage and fire up the air compressor and blow the dust out every 2 weeks and it looks like a fog bank coming out when I do it. Don't have a lappy as of yet but that will go on an every 2 week cleaning cycle too.

You probably dont want to be vaccuming your computer like you do a carpet!!!! For christ sakes think of the ESD (electrostatic discharge). The rapid discharge of static electricity from one conductor to another of a different potential. An electrostatic discharge can damage integrated circuits...

its the same thing as rubbing your feet on the carpet, not grounding yourself and then start assembling a desktpo PC... Your asking for things to get fried

so would i clean an xps m170 in the same kind of way (like its the same to take apart?)

Dismantle

Jonno - I dont suppose the XPS has the same setup as the sager, but the components are the same. Hence the heatsink will be close to the fan to facilitate cooling. You should be able to get to it by taking out a couple of screws.
Would he same apply to a 4750 Sager?
I have no idea on how to remove the heatsink in mine, I must confess I've noticed mine getting louder the last 8 or so months...
well, if you do remove your heatsink you will need to reapply some thremal compund. if you do not, the heat sink will not work properly, and could even make your system overheat and cook itself.
yes 4750 has the same setup

go to sager reviews and sager benchmarks -> 4750 Turion Upgrade Review

there are good pics of the cpu area there
