The two omega choices

When playing games that let you select your 3D Hardware if I have the omegas installed I get these two choices:

RADEON Moblity 9600(omega 2.4.04)[HAL] and the
RADEON Moblity 9600(omega 2.4.04)[REF]

What do they mean and what would be the better selection?

Use HAL. If there is a problem, use REF
