The 15 is a very good quality screen. 170 viewing angle, to the side, 400:1 contrast ratio, and good response time, like 25 ms or something. The 16 inch screen is nice but there is some ghosting when you are playing games. Only some people seem to notice it though. Personally, I would go with the 15 inch screen, the only problem being I don't think I would like the large amount of border around the sides. Either way though, they are both nice screens.

Just get the 16". Then you won't be thinking about should I have gotten the 15" instead. Go for it.

And, CONGRADULATIONS!!!!!!!, Finally.

But I commend you for doing your homework. It really bothers me when people just dive in and then find out the water is too shallow or too cold or something and then complain loudly or worse yet, sue somebody for their own failure to check it out.

Remember, there's only one stupid question: "Why didn't I ask about .... ... .. .?"

There are many posts on the subject, do a search.

With the 16" you are getting a larger screen for more money.

With the 15" you are getting a smaller screen for less money that has much better response time (considerably less ghosting if any at all) and better viewing angles. This would definately be the one for me, of the 2. For a 15" screen it is supose to be VERY nice.

There are no stupid questions...only stupid people who ask questions!

Just want to make sure you know that the 8890 uses dual channel memory, meaning that if you order 512 mb, it will have 2 - 256 modules. Your only way to upgrade to 1024 at that point would be replace both modules with 2 - 512mb modules. You can't just add another 512mb module.

yup!

i plan on selling the 256 modules for 50 each, and getting the 1GB for 200 thereby making it 100

I just tried "8890 uxga response" and many relavent threads seem to come.

As far as screen goes, I personally would go with the 15" UXGA for 3 reasons, 1) no 2-3 week wait period for the 16"
2) It's a damn nice screen! with awsome viewing angles (think 5680)
3) Price....

Of course the choice is yours! But you seem to be relying heavily on not spending more than you have to, hence, I would go 15"

i just got a little influx in cash to my cause!

the reason why i want the 16" is because the border on the 15" looks pretty bad, and i want a machine that will last me at least 3 years with an upgrade

this 16" will help me do that, but i need to know the SPECS of it. i still haven't found official specs of the 16" vs 15", only speculations even using Bombadil's search keywords

15" is faster (responce time) wise than the 16" , and by most popular opinion, a nicer screen. I don't really know what more information you'd want. The only advantage to 16" screen is, just that! 1 inch bigger (diagonally). Now to me, and I'm sure a handfull of other people, paying near $300.00 more for an item by technical standards is inferiror (less) to that of the 15" screen, well... it just doesn't make sense. But once again, and like I posted on your other thread, it is matter of what you want, personal preference, how much you're willing to pay, and how long you're willing to wait. If none of those things matter to you then go big!

But personally, i'd rather do a memory or hard drive upgrade than add 1" screen size.. And you'd still be cheaper if you got 1 gig of ram and hte 60 gig with 7200 RPM and a 15" screen..

If screen size really matters to the point you can't live with out a bigger screen, get a 4780, with the 17" screen.

but see, the thing for me is do the difference in specs make a difference in the actual performance?

i wnat to know if there is ghosting in games with the 16"

how bad is hte ghosting and what are the symptoms of it?

i read a couple of people's posts who say they would suggest the 16" regardless of any inferiroities it has compared ot the 15"

I've seen 1 8890 in my life, and it had the 16" screen, I personally was not impressed. But then again, since at the time all we did was play Ultima Online.... It's really not a good test of "ghosting" since Ultima is mearly stick figures compared to modern games...

Order the 16" screen if ya like, if you don't like it, send it back...
Also look around the reviews section for 8890s... there's enough of them out there to get a good idea... I would still rather have a beefier system then an un-noticable 1 inch added to the screen

It's your decision, and quite honestly, you'll need to make it... (rather than starting another post) No matter what you decide I'm sure it will be a good set up, my views and opinions (all they are) were just an idea for you to maximize for the money... So on that note, I do with you the best of luck in what ever you decide, do your home work further if your mind still isn't made up!

Take care, off to other threads!

I got the 15"... and its a great screen. Games look fantastic. The border around the screen is not that huge - and i would guess that it provides a slight (perhaps very slight) bit more protection for the screen...

like everyone else says, to each their own... but i could not justify $290 for a mere fraction of an inch on each side. ya dig?

man, u guys are talking me into the 15". THATS NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN
post #18 of 29
Personally I would go with the 16" for one reason: screen size

15" UXGA might look really small for you; 16" is already better. If you never had a 15" UXGA, I'd advise you to check one at your local mall because fonts and all the rest are REALLY small with that resolution. With 16", it is already better.

If you don't mind about having small text, then I'd go with the 15" - wide angle and faster refresh time wins all the way.

Cant you change the default font size in windows?

i decided to bite the bullet and sink for the 7200 RPM drive

now i'm just undecided on the monitor.

can someoen take a pic of the 15" laptop? based on your descriptions of it, i think the one previously posted from the manual is a different monitor.
