5672 hard disk click with hitachi hdd almost solution

OK I found something which seems to control this nuts-driving clicking sound.

Apparently this is something very common with hitachi disks.

take a look at power booster on http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm

when I use this and put it on max performanc, the clicking seems to be almost gone. When I put it on max battery - life, it clicks like hell.
This seems to make clear something: there must be a way to control the clicking entirely.

euhm... is this normal when this clicking happens every 2 seconds, even when doing nothing?

This same problem is also on the Seagate hard drives. Still no solution for Seagate?

Don't know about the seagate. What I learned from a whole day of searching forums and googling, is that apparently almost all Hitachi drives seem to have it, but that Seagate and Samsung should be very silent.

Concerning the powerboost tool... now it doesn't seem to make any difference anymore?!

Does anybody know what GSENSE ERROR RATE is (SMART). This is the second time today that I get a warning from hdd - health that this value has changed. First it was 100, then 99 and now 97 ?!

If you haven't already, I'd recommend 1) backing up your hard drive and 2) communicating this to Acer to initiate a replacement HDD. Sounds like it's starting to fail...

oh my god... and now it s back to 100

I find it hard to believe that my disk is failing. I just ran the hitachi's drive fitness test and didn't get one single error.Everything was fine.
I also didn't hear any clicks during the test. The clickings seems to be only ocurring under windows.

After having stopped windows firewall from writing a log file every second, the clicking has dramatically decreased. It seems there is a whole load of crap running in the background constantly accessing the hard disk, which makes it 'click' this often.

I used "filemon" to see what processes there are running, and figured there were a lot of them that I wouldn't need.

I'll keep on searching. I found some advices here:

whugster... where is this system event log?

I also mailed Hitachi about this issue and this is what they told me:

Dear Sir / Madam,

Thank you for contacting our Hitachi Technical Support Center regarding
your enquiry relating to the brief sound that emanates from our drives.

We suspect that the occasional 'sound' you are hearing is the Idle Time
Function that has been introduced on our latest drive designs as a
reliability enhancement. You need not be alarmed by this,

This "sound" is due to a brief but deliberate head arm movement every so
often. This has been added to maximise the reliability of our disk drive
products. This function is only invoked if an extended period of inactivity
is detected, so has no impact on active performance. [It is bad to leave
the heads hovering over the same data track unnecessarily].

Even after a period of time of activity the Idle Time Function can be
implemented as the Idle Time Function is a cumulative function.

The level of sound emitted may vary from one drive to another and as such
this should not give rise to concern or be considered an impending failure.

Please be assured that this drive design is one of the quietest drives, at
this data density, in the industry.

We trust this information will be of use and help you to resolve your
problem(s).

Best regards

Hitachi Technical Support Center

Ifound it. I don't see any errors concerning my disk, only a phew warnings:
a few times (about a week ago): event id 51
and a few times event id 57 (but i guess this is due to the fact that I sometimes 'unsafely' remove my external hdd

What hitachi describe is what I hear once in a while
if it is happening a lot, that would however point to a head reset.
The heads will go "home" to restart reading data that they are having problems with, similar to how your cd drive will re-read a dirty or damaged section of a disc to try to get the data.

unless this is happening more than once every 5 - 10 minutes I wouldnt worry

I guess what I have is still something else, I have every 4 - 10 seconds a short click that is accompanied with the hdd light, I suppose it's just windows entering the hdd, because the more processes I kill, the less activity I get.

for hitachi-people with click-problems, in case you didn't find it yet, here's a complete topic about it. Seems that we're not the only one:

For everybody with the Hitachi 5K100 80gb hdd:
Using the hitachi - feature tool, I completely got rid of the clicks!
I noticed that my acoustic management for my hard disk was disabled. I enabled it and chose a setting, now it's really silent.
Don't know what it does on the performance of the disk, though.
