I had a similar problem. If I'm not mistaken, there are two fans, one for the CPU and one for the graphics card. In my case, I had disabled one of the Nvidia processes that seemed not to be doing much of anything (in an attempt to save resources), which in turn disabled its powersaving features, and the graphics fan would never stop anymore.

In your case, the graphics configuration may have changed from before the format. Either reinstall the drivers or play with the Nvidia settings.
