E1705 replacement---LCD

For those of you who have exchanged your E1705 due to the LCD, which LCD panel did you receive on the replacement computer? I have fooled with brightness and other settings but am not very happy with the Samsung. I can not get the DVD movies to look right. If I increase the brightness the light leak on the bottom is distracting. The colors justs look dark and grainy when watching movies.I've also noticed that there doesn't seem to be much range for the brightness setting. Maybe I am missing something. I have other notebooks and LCD panels and have never had any complaints or misgivings. What are some suggested settings that people have been successful with? I do not want to exchange this and receive another LCD similar to this one. However, I would hope that I could get something better.

Thanks in advance.

That lpl0000000 lg one for the e1705 is pimp. I have the same one on my 9300 (which I thought was good), but the e1705s totally blows it away. Seriously the only lcds I've seen that were better are sonys and fujitsus.

Samsung LCD

I have the Samsung (SEC5557) and it is an excellent screen. It is almost too bright on the highest setting and the colors are outstanding. Small amount of light leakage but it is only noticable if the screen is black and the room is dark. It almost has a 180 deg. viewing angle. The thing is you will have to do some tweaking by yourself as it comes from the factory with the settings set dull.

Do you have any suggestins for tweaking? I have tried a few different things and the colors are too dark. Can't get rid of the light leakage. Obvious with a black background. Just wondering if most people who are exchanging are getting a better screen. As I state in my original post, I have other LCD panels as well as notebooks and have not had this problem before (light leakage, graininess, DVD movies that don't look right).

You should take the time and run the screen setup wizard that is under the Nvidia display properties, when I had my i9300 it did wonders when I first got it....

Alot of times just a little tweaking of the actual display drivers will help keep you from frigging with the brightness controls too much...

Thanks I appreciate it. I'm willing to give this a try but the light leak is distracting. I will be using the notebook for photo and video editing as well as watching DVDs from time to time and a few other things.

Samsung settings

aves6,

My settings for my Samsung are:

Desktop Color Corr.
Digital Vibrance: medium +3
Brightness: 98%
Contrast: 110%
Image Sharpning: +4

Overlay Color Corr.
Brightness: 98%
Contrast: 109%

Video Overlay
Hue: +22 deg.
Saturation: 86%

Also, make sure your color is set to 32 bit mode instead of 16. The other day I noticed that something wasn't right and I had somehow switched it to 16 bit.

My light leakage is only noticable on a very dark screen in a dark room. Other than that I am very happy with this screen.

Texanstc,

Thanks. I will try these when I get home from work. I did turn the brightness down initially and increased the contrast a bit. Set the vibrance to medium. Still felt that DVDs were dark and when I turn up the brightness the light leakage is irritating. I am very much on the verge of calling Dell tonight and requesting an exchange....just too much light leakage and colors too dark, imo. However, I will try your settings and see what I think.

On your DELL invoice, what is the part# of the LG LCD Screen they installed? There might be a possiblity that they "upgraded" the LG Screens

Tried your settings and then watched some DVDs as a test. DVD movies still dark and, therefore, not able to see some details. One example was "Lord of the Rings" Fellowship... Of course, if I increase brightness, details are more evident but then light leakage more evident, too. Decreased gamma settings to about .85 and noticed some improvement. Might try fooling with the settings a bit more. I'm probably going to call Dell tomorrow and see if I can exchange. Guess, it's worth taking a chance. I am assuming that if the 2nd laptop is worse I can just keep the first one.???

Would like to stick with the E1705. My pricing on this was very good. I am very comfortable with the keyboard. This notebook is VERY quiet, so quiet that it doesn't seem as if it is on. Of course, it's fast and seems as if the build is solid. BUT the screen could definitely be better.

Lcd

aves6,

If your light leakage is really bothering you I would get a replacement because there is not much you can do to reduce it. On mine, thankfully, it is not really that bad.
Also, my video setting I gave you might not be optimal since I have not played with the DVD too much.

texanstc,

I brought the notebook to work and the light leak wasn't as evident here both with AC and battery power. Different lighting, of course, at work than at home. I would be curious how DVDs look on your notebook. I showed a co-worker who did notice the light leak but said it wasn't bad. Also compared the DVD picture to another notebook here at work and it also seemed dark but the E1705's colors were better. I have read several posts here that state that the light leak seems to decrease over time or maybe people just get used to it. I was using the notebook very late yesterday trying to tweak settings. Really noticed the text and how crisp and black it looked. My concern is switching it out for something that is "worse". Some have noted that they have already gone through four or five exchanges. I certainly don't want to go that route.

Thanks again for your help.

Dvd

aves6,

After I did a reformat and OS reinstall I called Dell to get the PowerDVD CD and they sent me Sonic Cineplayer which I'm not sure I like. So I had to call them back and it is in the mail now. Do you have PowerDVD installed on your system?

I do have PowerDVD on my system. Dell sent me cineplayer, too. Also sent me Roxio. Roxio is not installed on my system and cineplayer is one component of Sonic digital media. I had requested Power DVD, digital media and mediadirect. I called them Fri. to tell them I received the wrong disk and they are supposed to be sending out the correct set.
