Asus M6800n *56k warning* - Page 6

Regards to the battery there is a guideline for all lithium & li-polymer batteries. Chrage it to full and discharge (by use). Repeat this a couple of times, and the battery is @ full calibration. Remember to ones in a while to discharge it. Allthough it´s not necessary for these kind of batteries, it´s recommended anyway.

I don't know if XP is reporting it correctly... I'm just going by the speed display changes in the properties box under "my computer". yes, I run windows, sorry.

I have the 1.7Ghz model, 15.1" sxga+ (1400x1050)
A great machine, and extremely fast. I sat working for over 5 hours before it asked for juice.

Yes, there is a slight gradient issue, however I'm not too concerned with it at the moment. I'm a student and cannot afford to have it fixed (nor can I afford for it to be out of use) at this moment. With all the problems of other more prominent manufacturers build quality, I would not have spent my money anywhere else.

webweaver, I'm interested in what ASUS told you about the screen issue. Did they say it's a problem that they can fix? And if they said that, does that mean that instead of fixing the problem to begin with, they're shipping them out and only fixing them when someone complains? That doesn't sound good, and I hope ASUS wouldn't be doing that.

I've ordered my M6700N from germany, 1.4 Ghz 512 RAM 60 GB 7200 rpm HDD, DVD/CDRW, 15.4 WXGA and the rest of the gimmicks for just under 1600 Euroes, or 2025 US Dollars. I've read that there is no significant real-life difference between a 1.4 and a 1.6 Ghz centrino, and I choose to invest a bit more on the HDD, which should really rock at 7200 rpm and 8 MB of cache, compared to the standard 4200 rpm, 2 MB previous to the upgrade.
Should have it in my hands by next week, will post my own review then...

I think that they are shipping them out first and (maybe) fixing them when someone complains... At least I saw one 15.1" in a store and I could notice that gradient issue. If the upper part was ok, the lower part of the screen was too bright... Going for the 15,4" now...

I'm a bit disappointed in Asus here, as they are reporting that nobody else is reporting a problem, despite my providing links to various forum articles pointing them to such complaints. Maybe the wheel just hasn't gotten squeaky enough yet. If you're experiencing the gradient issue, and/or considering purchase of the M6N but concerned about the gradient problem, I'd appreciate if you would so advise James at Asus notebook support via email at this address:

notebooktsd@asus.com

James seems to be a pretty nice guy. If he hears about this issue from a few others, however, then at the very least Asus can no longer say that I'm the only one reporting a problem...;-/

To reiterate what I've said before, this is otherwise a great machine. Which is all the more reason why we should not be complacent and accept what is obviously a flawed display.

I agree with you webweaver, I think the notebook is exceptionally great, considering the price vs components (minus the display issue) and the great build quality. I have emailed James as well.

negotiations went fine, they had the model immediately available for delivery. Note that as many other german online shops, they require you to pay in advance via bank transfer. I read elsewhere that it was a reliable shop and they answered my emails very efficiently - the first one on a sunday evening
they actually ask you for your keyboard of choice and fit it on - I wanted a UK keyboard and got one
also, they are going to perform a pixel error test before sending it to make sure there are no dead pixels- another incentive to buy from them.
check out www.geizhals.at you find many online shops seelings the asus in germany- if you can live with a german keyboard and a 40 Gb 4200 rpm HDD, prices go down till they reach about 1400 euroes...

Beware that the German models are just like the one aliensub reviewed, that is barebones without O/S ( I personally run linux am not planning to install windows). If you check out the lapxpress.de site, they do windows installations as well for an extra cost, in most languages.
They can fit another keyboard into any model, according to their website.

I already sent an e-mail with a question for the change of keyboard... Yes, I know that it comes without OS. But thanks for reminding!

But how is it with garantie? Do you have to send it to German or could you be assisted in your country?

warranty is given by asus, on a global level. don't think it has to do with where
you buy the laptop
let me know how you're getting on with them, I will update you on the status of my order...

I already e-mailed them, Hans, very fast replys! They can get me one with the portuguese keyboard, but I have to wait 2 weeks for them to get it from Taiwan...

Anyway, 15.4" 1.5GHz 512Mb Ram 60GB 7200rpm Hdd=1.857,44 EUR, shipping included. Here the same costs 2200€.

Thanks batrachomachia! Will keep you posted!

yes, they seem quite reliable. I asked for a UK keyboard, which I guess is more popular than a Portuguese one, so they had one immediately available
. Still waiting for my bank transfer to complete, a shame almost no German online store accepts credit card, I guess there have been too many cases of fraud going on....
so are you getting it from them?

Since it takes 2 weeks from them to get the Pt keyboard, plus 3 days/shippment, I will make the payement in a week from now, hope everything runs smooth! The laptop has warranty for how long?

warranty should be asus global standard, 2 years, that's my understanding
I performed the payment once I got my order number from them via email, so I should recieve mine by middle of this coming week...

Aliensub- Thanks for the informative review. I was wondering how the noise level is on the machine, is it very noticeable?

Also to anyone who can answer- Can you get a 60gb 7200 HDD and DVD-R/W in the M6N in N. America. This configuration seems available in European countries, but I have yet to see it in N. America?
