Powernotebooks

If you can look past their business motto, then powernotebooks.com now sells the asus m6000n rebadged as the c3:17
post #122 of 268
but can one really look past that motto?

Also to anyone who can answer- Can you get a 60gb 7200 HDD and DVD-R/W in the M6N in N. America. This configuration seems available in European countries, but I have yet to see it in N. America?
Yes. PM me.

Well I heard back from the distributor of the M6N. Their tech guy says that there's no problem with the screen, and that another one there looks exactly the same -so now i don't know if there's going to send a new one, the same one, or the same one with another screen....

has anyone gotten any other news from asus?
I don't think I care to see what the next one will look like.

I'm looking into returning it - before I get it back - and seeing if they'll take back the DVD-rw at no charge.

If things go well, this time next week I'll try to be the proud owner of an AOpen 1557.

Hi all

First off, this has been the best site for my laptop research so far. Not alot of info out there on this Asus model, but it sure looks fantastic!

One thing I am thinking of- I am planning on going through powernotebooks, and they only offer the WXGA so far- not the WSXGA+ screen. Has anyone seen a side by side of these, and would care to comment? Is this feature worth waiting for??

Thanks guys. Looking to order this thing in 2 weeks.

It really depends on your personal preference. If you have good eyesight (or what it´s called in english), and need alot of workspace (programming, graphics etc.), then you maybe want to wait.
I have worked with a Dell Inspiron 8600 with a WSXGA+ and i got headache by using it. I do alot of programming and it haven´t bothered me much that i don´t have more workspace (my dekstop is dualhead with 2 19" crt´s @ 1280x1024).

I suspect the tech guy might be trying to take the easy route and is just telling you that so they don't have to deal with it. I have heard from SXGA+ owners who are not experiencing any display issues, so it's obviously not a problem on EVERY unit out there.

Do they charge shipping for the RMA, if not, then what have you got to loose by sending in back??

To the best I have been able to discern, the WXGA+ display is not available in North America at this time, nor are there plans to distribute them here near term. My distributor asked their Asus rep about them at my request and they were not able to provide any additional insights either.

Your laptop comes with no O.S., but does it come with drivers and utilities cd´s (in english)? Such as:

ASUSDVD XP V4.0
Power Director V2.5 ME
Medi@Show V2.0 SE
Trend PC-Cillin 2002 180 days trial version
Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0
NERO Express V5.5
ASUS Probe V2.10
ASUS Live Update
ASUS ChkMail
ASUS Hotkey

?

Did you get over the payment issues?

Hey WW

Not to plug- I have no reason to- but the powernotebooks reseller just came out with the option on the asus conversion they have. I am still deciding whether I want the WXGA or SXGA+. Its the WSXGA+ I was inquiring about. (and may have been what you meant) I just dont think I will run the res that high, just wondered about the pixel size and clarity, which was explained a bit above.

Thanks

Powernotebooks.com does not have WSXGA+ for the M6N on their website. Where did you get that info?

I think webweaver did mean WSXGA+ when he said WXGA+ (which doesn't exist). But so far only SXGA+ and WXGA are available in NA.

hey there, laptop comes with all this plus
bag and mouse. that's the asus standard pack, which is very good, IMHO. I have read in german forums that the bag seems to be very good and roomy.
I am waiting for payment to reach lapxpress account, but it's fault of my originating bank being a bit slow in trans-european payments. hopefully it will all be done by tomorrow or wednesday.

So many keys.... So few gingers. Sol littel time... There, I did it again didn't I... Bummer.

But seriously, Delta is correct, this is indeed what I meant.

It's been about 2 weeks since last I inquired about the WSGA+. I'll inquire again tomorrow.

Hehe, I know what you mean- I didnt mean to throw that plus in there. Hmm, this smiley now seems appropo-

Anyhoo, myself I am trying to decide, SXGA+ or WXGA. Leaning towards the W... but not sure yet. Which is the samsung? For 2K spent, I want this thing to freaking scream. I wouldnt think of paying more than 750$ on parts for a screamer desktop, 2k is a ton of cash for a laptop. So I am being a bit nuerotic about the display, oh well.

WSXGA+ follow up-- I just got off phone with distributor and WSGA+ are definitely not available in US, at least through authorized channels. Someone may be importing them through Europe, but this would not be condoned by Asus.

SXGA+ and WXGA continue to be available. It seems the SXGA+ display can be somewhat of a crap shoot, however, so you may want to go with WXGA if the resolution meets your needs.

Regarding the SXGA+ display gradient issue, Asus Taiwain continues to officially deny any problem. Well, maybe I'm not putting that right. Maybe more accurate to say that they've yet to acknowledge that there is a problem. Unofficially, however, I can report that I just spoke with someone at Asus USA and they are aware of the problem. Looks like affected units all came off a particular production site and that new shipments from different site are scheduled to arrive in US latter part of next week. Thereafter a few more days to get out to distributors. It is anticipated that these units will not exhibit the display gradient issue but in the spirit of erring on the side of caution, cannot say with certainty until they acutally arrive.

To reiterate what I've said before, otherwise this is an excellent machine and my sense about this is that Asus USA wants/intends to make things right and act in a manner commensurate with their reputation for quality, but cannot come out with an official statements until they get the okay from Taiwain.

Has anyone tried out the new m6n bios update? M6N0205A.zip
it was released on March 1st. I'm still running what mine came with, 203A or something like that... Does anyone know what it fixes?
Thanks.

Got back my M6N yesterday. They ended up replacing the screen.
I now have a nice "Powered ByAsus" logo where there used to be an empty space on the back of the screen.
The screen issue looks to be resolved, or at the very least a lot better. In general use, the screen is very crisp and clear, but watching a DVD, the bottom black area seems to be illuminated more than the top, as if there's light leaking. You can still see that the top is a little darker, but its not that pronounced - the bottom does not appear washed out anymore relative to the top of the screen that was too dark to read.

I updated to the latest bios ( the one that just came out). I got a windows message that it installed my new hardware - allthough I don't know what I was missing before. The machine seems very stable ( before and after). I was looping 3dmark03 for ~2 hours. I'm not going to post any photos of the re-build ( unless specifically asked), as the pdf posted earlier is very good and contains all the relevant images already.

Yo Manny--

Just curious, did you go directly through Asus USA, or one of their distributors? Did they just replace the screen on your existing unit, or pull the HD and just put into new machine (same serial # or different)??
I went through my distributor, he sent it back to Asus in Toronto.
I think they just replaced the screen. My system was a barebook, so I had to take it apart before sending it back, but the unit that I received back did not have the little sticker covering the thermal pad on the heat sink. I'm pretty sure its the same unit I got back, but I did not keep a copy of my serial before I sent it.
