Asus M6800n *56k warning* - Page 8

Hello people, I'm from Chile and I'm about to buy (if all goes well) a brand new M6N model this week. I'm still deciding on a few things like the screen for example, can someone explain to me what xga, sxga, sxga+, wxga and wsxga mean? which one should I get? and what about 15.1 and 15.4 screens?
I've read some 15.1 have a brightness issue, does this happen with the 15.4 also?

I expect to get a 1.7 Ghz w/80 Gb HDD 512 RAM system
I asked about 802.11g but my reseller told me it's not supported yet??? is this accurate?

Thanks in advance

Hello Scarmona

xga = 1024x768
sxga = 1280x1024
sxga+ = 1440x1050,

and wxga = 1280x800

for the M6N , the 15.1 is sxga+, while the 15.4 is wxga.

From what I've seen there are no wxga users that have the brightness gradient problem ( allthough its stil present on my M6N -15.1 sxga+ - even after an RMA)

In terms of an 802.11g solution, I think your reseller was talking about an Intel 802.11g solution which I don't think has come out yet. I think any mini pci 11g card will work, and I ordered the Dell truemobile 1300 card. I haven't received it yet, but will post here once I've tried it.
hope this helps,

man-y

I am waiting for payment to reach lapxpress account, but it's fault of my originating bank being a bit slow in trans-european payments. hopefully it will all be done by tomorrow or wednesday.
So, did you get past those payment problems? I made the money transfer today and at my bank they said that it would take 2 days, maybe a bit more. Hans told me that he has a costumer from England, and it took five days to make the transfer, I presume he was talking about you?

I dont know anyone is interested, but someone else was talking about importing laptops from japan so i figured i would drop it. Here is the asus laptop with two options i havent seen anywhere else (in america). Both the WSXGA+ 15.4" AND dual format DVD burner DVD+-RW. I think i may be ordering it (since i live in japan) in the next few days and may have a review. You dont really need to speak japanese to check out the page. Scroll to the bottom of the first page for a list of options

thanks manny for the quick reply, it helped a lot

I still don't have the price estimates from my reseller (apparently something went wrong with the shipping) but I'm liking the M6N more and more as I read these reviews.

I couldn't help noticing that Dell has some cool notebooks with very attractive prices, I liked the Inspiron 8600, of which its only drawback in my opnion is its weight. Is there anyone out there that knows both systems that can make a quick comparison with pro's a cons? that would be great.
Thanks a again people!

all fine and well, I am writing from the M6700N Payment took 8 days, laptop got shipped on a Thursday, got delivered on Saturday. Initial impressions are VERY postive, only problem so far is to install ACPI properly under LInux ( I am not using Winbloze) to limit the fan turning on all the time whilst plugged in. The laptop does get a bit hot on the underside, but I guess that's standard, even the mighty Centrino is meant to get hot I am especially impressed by silence and the sound card quality, much superior to other built in sound card solutions I have seen in laptops.
The laptop is very linux-friendly, had most of my hardware recognised during install
overall, lapxpress.de was very good, one of the few online stores that actually answers to each and every email you send, within 30 minutes most of the time!

CensoredEvolutn, I would very much like to hear your review of your WSXGA+ m6n when you get it. I'd particularly like to know about your impressions of the screen if that's cool.
Thanks!

Hi,

I live in Japan too, and I've ordered this notebook.

1.4Ghz
CDR/DVD
15.4 WSXGA+ 1680Ɨ1050
ATI 9600 64mb
256mb RAM
40gb HD

Not sure if I'm going to regret the low specs, but I'm planning on buying extra RAM elsewhere (cheaper), changing the HD to a bigger and faster one and buying and DVDR for my PC instead.

And after reading about the minor performance difference between the 1.4 and 1.6, I got the 1.4.

Basically my main priority is battery life and the video card. I know that 5 hours or slightly more is to be expected for this notebook, but do you know how long it will last while playing games?

Can't wait to get it this saturday :-)

I've had mine last for a couple of hours playing battlefield 1942 on the "game" setting with no AC.
Also I've had mine last over 5.5 hours while coding / browsing very nice.

Hey gouki, you bought the epsondirect endeavor nt7000pro??? thats hot. let us all know how it is when you get it. Did you mail order it or go to their store? where in japan do you live? I live too far away from tokyo to go to the store, so i would have to mail order it. Do you know anything about this epson direct company? Their website is hot, and service generally seems to be way better in japan but i guess im paranoid. Also just a note they have the DUAL format DVD burner, both + AND -, totally hot.

Anybody have the REAL weight for the m6n? 3 weights would be nice

Travel with AC adapter & optical (CD/DVD) & battery
Standard optical & battery
Light battery, no optical, (is there a weight saver module???)

3 questions:

1) is it possible to slow down the processor , when it on external power
(not batteri) , so it do not using the fan / getting warm .
I will primary use it for text editing , so no need for cpu power.
HATE NOISE

2) Have You or other experience with M6000N with LINUX (Redhat 7.X -9.x)

3) can this blue lighting button in middle be turned off.
aint it very disturbing ??

Icekiller
IceKiller, I finally have the answer to your question. Yes its possible to slow down the CPU, even when on external power. While, there are certain presets that exist in the PowerGear application ( the ASUS application that allows you to quickly cycle through settings) everything is adjustable, even the CPU speed when plugged into AC. The only draw back is that there are only three presets available while plugged into AC.

I bought it from a store (LAOX). Where do you live? You can try visiting Laox or EpsonDirect in Aikihabara.

Getting anything serviced in Japan can be a problem if you can't speak Japanese. Since I'm getting the Japanese keyboard, I have to learn how to use it as the keys for " ' etc are in different places. Not complaining about the Hiragana keys though :-)

I didn't get the DVDR because I already have a desktop which is faster and cheaper to burn CDs/DVDs.

I'm getting XP home edition Japanese version, does anybody know how I can view it in English without having to install another version of Windows? I heard that there is a language pack which you can download from Microsoft, but not sure what the name of it is called.

Also, do you think it is possible for me to use ASUS software (drivers, battery software etc) on my Epson notebook since they are exactly the same? (though I have 802.11b/g the ASUS doesn't seem to have it).

can someone please tell me where can I get M6N with WXGA or WSXGA+, I really prefer WSXGA but I read Webweaver's post that its not availiable here in US.

Most of the M6N I found is only 15" SXGA or even 14"
Please let me know
thank you

Thanks.
Not sure what it fixes, but it does add an Asus splash to boot up. Also, as I understand it, newer units are shipping with an "Asus" badge on case instead of the blank space. Hence I suspect that may well be all it does, as they probably realized after initial release that they were missing out on a marketing opportunity....

Asus M6N SXGA Problem

Hi All,

I was about to buy a Asus M6N when I came across the postings on SXGA brightness problem in this forum, I am confused on what to do. Either go for the WXGA model or take the risk of SXGA and then get it replaced by ASUS.

What do you guys recommend? Will Asus replace a brightness problem SXGA screen?

Thank you in advance,

You can't. In the US you're constrained to SXGA+ or WXGA, both of which are by now available through several resellers. PM me if you're unable to find the config you want (other than display).

Just wanted to notify that asus has updated most of the drivers for the notebook, including a new bios (0206) as of 03-18-2004.
I have installed them but no noticable difference, but then i haven“t had any problems yet so why should i see any
You can find them here:
