Mmmmm... Maybe that will be the only option here too...

aliensub, about the airvents,

1-you say that there is one beneath the keyboard? The air is sucked through the keys? If that´s so, maybe it is good when typing with the laptop on your lap (legs)... But is there another vent under the laptop?

2-One thing i didn´t understand yet... You said that you wanted the Acer in the first place but is was expensive, but then you bought a more expensive one!

Edit: Haaaa! Just saw the airvent on the top you refered! The air isnt sucked trhough the keys! From the picture it is hard to see, it is on the upper left side isn´t it...

4-Can you listen music with the screen closed? I read somewhere that with the Acer2003 that was impossible...

0.5 Nope the 1400x1050 is alo sold here. The reason for using the WXGA is that i use the computer many hours a day ( 8+ hours), and then my eyes would be too effected with the high resolution, 1280x800 is okay when you get used to it. And the wsxga+ will first be sold here in about 2 month.

1. There is some sort of ripples that look like an airvent beneath but can´t feel any air from it. Have tried to have the laptop closed while the cooler is running, and it doesn´t seem to have any problems with it.

2. The acer was around 260€ more expensive than the asus here.

4. No problem at all, doesn´t affect the soundquality.
One more thing about the speakers: On many notebooks they a pressed beyond recognition to get it as loud as possible which make them very screamy. On this the speakers is well dimensioned (helped the the 4 speaker setup), so although there is no bass it plays fairly linear through the rest of the spectrum

Hi aliensub,.
I found a very good deal for an Asus M6800N, identical to yours except for the 15.1 screen ( I am a programmer and need to dock / split many screen, so I need the higher resolution). Do you feel that the HDD is fast enough ? I have seen too many laptops with a slow HDD that really hampered proper operation....and 4200 rpm would seem to suggest that the HDD is a bit slow...although is is capable of UDMA 100 operation. Are 5400 rpm drives avialable already for these Asus models ?
Many thanks!

It depends on the dealer you are using. Some sell it with a 5400 others only with the 4200. Mine is with a 4200 and it is rare i get annoyed with it. When i copy some files or extracting something and working at the same time, the hd comes to a crawl, but thats the only times i can feel it. And I am used to my desktop 7.200. 8MB cache HD´s.
Also sometimes when you start some programs which need much data you can feel it e.g. outlook with many mails in (my outlook file is 50MB+). When first everything is running i don´t notice it.

But if you can get it with a 5400 HD then get it.

thanks for your notes, they were really useful.
One other question: when you mean 2.7 kgs, do you mean that that's the weight with the batteries attached or without batteries ? Asus lists the 15.1 model as 2600g, I fail to understand whether that includes the batteries...

As far as i recall it´s 2.6kg without battery and 2.7kg with battery attached (don´t know if that´s realistic, don´t own a weigher). Have tried to measure it with a dell inspiron 8600 and it´s pretty much lighter. The dell weighs 2.37 kg.

A little sidenote: also discovered that the display on the dell was more loose, don´t know if that is specific to that unit

do you mean that the inspiron 8600 is lighter ? I don't recall dell being only 2.37...is that a typo , and do you mean that dell is 3.37 ?
many thanks again

Sorry No the asus is much lighter. Checked the dell site, and it states it as 2.37 kg

no worries, I am extremely grateful for all the advice you are offering;
I was considering the 8600 for a long time before seeing the asus and horrible dell build quality. Do you recommend the asus over the dell wholeheartedly? Also; could you please tell us which brand the harddrive is ? also, do you have any info on the LCD screen make and specs?
http://www.aida32.hu is a free program that gives you all such info, it would be great if you could post the log from it here
thanks again

After i have used the dell I can say that i wouldn´t buy that machine, it just feels too bulky and bad quality (loose display, noisy, crancky etc.) The asus is a direct competitive, and it feels so much more robust. Often i carry it around by only holding it at the edge in one hand, would never dare to do that with the dell, would excpect it break over in 2 The only thing the dell do "better" is the screen resolution, but you can get the 15.1" asus that gives you SXGA+ and the widescreen will arrive in some time in WSXGA+. I personally have no problems with the 1280x800.

The HD is a IBM travelstar 80GN.

Couldn´t get info on the screen. It just stated it as a standardscreen

aliensub, does the screen has any dead pixel?

Sorry, but i have 2 defect pixels on my M6000. It's the 15.1'' (1400*1050). 1 is behind the taskbar (w2k) (most of the time ok, but sometimes lights white), 1 is in the right bottom corner, about 2cm from the bottom, 0.5 cm from the right (lights blue always).
I know of 1 other owner who had 1 in the middle of the screen. Fortunately we bought 'pixel-warranty', so mine will be exchanged (but they're short on stock at the moment...). See also http://www.notebookreview.com/forums...p?TOPIC_ID=159

Hmmm sorry to hear.
I think it´s stupid that you have to buy a pixel warranty. Would be like buying a steering warranty. If your new car can´t steer all the way right, you can get it exchanged, othewise it´s just sad for you But it just seems to be the rule of the computer business, if you can get away with cheating people then do it...

In Denmark we have this law that says if you buy things over the internet you have a 14 day "satisfactory" return policy. If you don´t like the product, although you have used it, you can return it. If my notebook had dead pixels I would have used that, because it wouldn´t stand up to my needs.
The dead pixel policy from Asus, at least what a lbs owner told me, is that you can exchange your laptop if it has:

2 dead pixels side by side;
4 dead pixels in 1 cm2
8 dead pixels in total. That sucks... Anyway, they will only be available in the 3 week of february here in Portugal...
Jeah, I agree: the dead pixels suck. Here in Holland i could have returned the laptop within a week, but i like my m6000 too much.
Thanx Aliensub for the review. I didn't realize i had to do without the 2 speakers in the screen until i saw your pics here. Sound quality on my 15.1'' is no too good, but then i didn't get it for the sound. The 2 speakers i have are situated UNDER (?) the laptop-frontside. So quality is best when placed on a hard surface, like a table. But most of the time i use it on my lap (which is sometimes a bit warm, when i'm video-editing and tha cpu and hd reach 60 degr. celcius). I think the 15.4'' looks better because it doesn't have the strange metal strip around the screen. But i still like it very much!!

In my country the M6000N 1.6GHz comes with 80Gb HDD at 4200rpm. (2.143€)
Would you guy´s change it for a 60Gb HDD 7200 rpm? I read that they are much faster, but consumes a bit more power and are noisier and hot...

Another option would be staying with the 80Gb one, and upgrade later... What would you guy´s do/prefer?

Thread Starter
I would keep the 80GB, I more need the space than the spinning It hasn´t bothered me with the slower 4200rpm yet. But again, it´s a personal preference.
On Tom´s hardwareguide there is a test between a 4200, 5400 and 7200 rpm disk, on the things you mention (heat, power consumin etc.) There where no noticable difference between the 5400 & 7200 disks in power consumption.
