On Tom´s hardwareguide there is a test between a 4200, 5400 and 7200 rpm disk, on the things you mention (heat, power consumin etc.) There where no noticable difference between the 5400 & 7200 disks in power consumption.
See, I´m going to place an order on the Asus M6000N 1.6GHz and for more 7€ I can have the hitachi 60Gb 7200rpm... Don´t know what to do.... I think I´m going for the hitachi 60Gb 7200rpm

According to Sanda Pro 2004 my 80Gb/5400 has about the same score as a 60Gb/7200 IBMDeskstar with 2Mb: 23188 kB/s on the 2nd logical-disk (1st is 5Gb), which is formatted with NTFS, OS is W2K SP4. During 'beching' the speedstep setting was 'Maximum Performance'. I think it will be more quiet than a 7200 rpm disk.

Sorry to butt in on the conversation, but does anyone know when the wsxga+ versions are supposed to come out in the US?
I've been holding out for an M6000N because I like ASUS' laptops. I do quite a bit of graphics intensive stuff and I think that screen would better suit my needs...
Also, Miloman, did you get your warrenty straight from ASUS or through your reseller?
Thanks.

I´ve heard some rumors about late february / beginning of march. Don´t know it it´s true though.

I know asus delivers it with a 2 year global warranty as standard
post #45 of 268
Thanks for the rumor and the warranty info.
Do you happen to know if the M6000N's CPU is upgradable? I've heard that some new laptops have upgradable banias to dothan routes...

Aliensub: the late February is a data confirmed by ESC for wide-screen models, btw. have you seen them at any other reseller in US?

As for the 2 year global warrnaty, ESC does not state anything like that on their site, or i just missed it But i think a simple email to ESC and ASUS.usa should sort that out. If it comes to be the deal, than it is a really good one ... in my opinion, as I am on a constant move between US and EU.

Got it from my reseller, for about 60 euro.

I pretty sure the cpu should be upgrade-able. My reseller had the Dothan in the pricelist, but removed them.... But I'm going to buy a Dothan processor when the prices go way down. Hope the M6000 cooler holds up.

I know they are going to deliver them with the dothan processor, so the models out now should have the hardware to run the dothan. A salesman told that the M6N could be delivered with the dothan around april or may, here in Denmark.
Arokis-> Don´t know about the american resellers. Live in europe.....

Don´t think you can change the cpu just like that. As fa as i can see, you don´t have access to it, unless you disassemble the whole unit

That's the idea: take the thing apart Fortunately there are a lot of screws on the bottom, so looks straightforward, allthough it will not be like that i presume... But i will do it in say 2 years from now, when even the Dothan will have a replacer, and the prices have come down. It's actually only for the expierience of updating as i feel that updating only the cpu won't bring that much, unless you are doing a lot of very cpu-intensive work (like MPEG2 encoding).

I'm getting really close to buying an M6000N with 15.1" SXGA+ display. Were the comments about 4:3 display issues applicable to the XGA, SXGA+, or both?? Specific to the M6N or some other model?? Can anyone elaborate??

TIA

It´s only the 4:3 model that haves problems (don´t know if they are solved). I have the 16:10 (widwscreen) model, and it´s brilliant. Haven´t heard of anybody else having troubles with it.
What kind of problems does the 4:3 model have?
Complaints I saw related to some dead pixels and brightness that varied from top to bottom of the display. But.... I don't know it these complaints pertained to

1) All Asus notebooks using 4:3 displays

2) The M6N using 4:3 displays versus some other model(s)

3) The 15.1" XGA, SXGA+, or both.

I have the 15.1 SXGA+ (1400*1050) version. 2 defect pixels, but no problem with the variation in brightness. But might explain why there are no 15.1'' SXGA+ available for 2 weeks. My reseller tells me he hopes to get new 15.1'' end of 12/13 february (Holland).
So how's the quality of the SXGA+ display otherwise?? My upstream has one left before having to wait on next shipment. Any info if Asus is moving to new provider for the 4:3 displays??
I am also very close to buying a the 4:3 m6000n sxga+
I have used ASUS products before, which is why I'm going to buy another one. I had an old P-iii laptop of theirs, and a friend of mine has a p4 asus laptop as well. Both were very good quality. There were no display issues in either of them, so hopefully ASUS's quality control hasn't gone down with the recent complaints...
As I hear it, there are no wsxga+ 15.4" m6000n models in the US.
ASUS' keyboards are great, and the feel of the plastics they use are very solid, unlike Dell. The dead pixel thing is a gamble you have to take with laptops.
When I get mine, I'll post some picts of any defects if you guys would like...
It seems this link Aliensub posted here mentions the display brightness problem. But I don' read German and not sure how well the Google translation is...

It isn´t possible to use 5.1 speakers with this laptop is it...? Only 2.1?
Thread Starter
No surround here. Then you need to have an external soundcard (firewire, pcmcia or firewire). You can´t use 2.1 either.
It´s actually a non existent standard. 5.1 refers to an extra channel for bass managment. The .1 channel is also named LFE (Low Frequenzy Effects). Some companys just think it sounds smart to call a normal stereo speaker setup with a subwoofer 2.1. In 5.1 you have 5 fullrange speakers and a subwoofer.
That was the technical lesson for today

Any word on the response time of the 15.1" screens? milo?

How does scrolling text look in Internet Explorer or scrolling in Excel look like?
