Asus M6800n *56k warning* - Page 5

It shouldn´t be able to go lower than that (600mhz for the 1.6 Ghz). It supports 3 clockrates. 37% - 59% - 100%. No more, no less. 180 Mhz sounds strange to me. But ok, if it runs well then everything should be allright.

Hi aliensub and others,
do you have any idea on what the make and model of the
WXGA TFT screen is ? I am especially interested in the contrast ratio ...do you think it is 300:1 or close to that ? that would be really great...also, do you have any indication on what the dot pitch level is ?
amny thanks!

Thanks for the great post
Does anyone have any info on the response times of the various LCD's used in this model? I'm very interested in this machine. It seems like it has good build quality. Also, how loud would you rate this maching compared to others?

Thanks

My 15.1" SXGA+ M6800 is very quiet. Running 60GB Toshiba 5400 rpm drive. All I ever hear is the cooling fan kicking on from time to time. How often this happens depends on how hard yer' workin' the sytem.

Previous to buying the Asus I test drove a similarly configured Quanta Z500. If pressed I might say the Asus has slightly more fan noise, but then I think it probably also needs to do little bit better job of cooling, as it sports the Radeon 9600, as compared to the Radeon 9000 in the Quanta.

webweaver, do oyu notice any screen problem like someone stated on the 15.1" model? (unenvenly lit(?))? Dead pixels? What processor do you have?

Anyone know how to change CPU of M6N? I have a Dothan 1.8G engineering sample at hand, really want to try it on my M6N.

I don’t think we need to take the whole thing apart to access the CPU and heatsink fan unit. After removing keyboard, you can see the CPU and heatsink fan unit are blocked by the upper frame (which has power button and all those Instant Launch Keys) surrounding keyboard. Lift this upper frame then we can change CPU ourselves. The question is this upper frame attach to the lower frame very tightly, anyone know how to safely lift this upper frame?

If you remove the optical driver ( or travel tray), you'll see a little clip that holds the upper frame to the body of the notebook. push it in a little, and you'll be able to lift the frame ( on the right side). You should be able to lift the frame up safely enough to change CPU's allthough I haven't yet figured out how to remove the frame completely.

My M6n is still in the shop, but when It comes back I can take pictures for you if you don't see what I'm talking about.
Good luck

Need some advice from you guy´s...

The 15,4" 1.6GHz 80GB Hdd Asus raised up to 2400€ in my country... Not an option anymore...

Now I can have the 15,1" 1.6GHz 60GB Hdd or the 15.4" 1.5GHz 60GB Hdd

Wich one would you guy´s get and why? Is the 1.6GHz really faster than the 1.5GHz? Honestly, I do like the 15,4" looks more, but I really want to buy the best deal... So?

batrachomachia: WXGA display (1280x800) is 98 dpi. Don´t now the contrast level.
Batas: I don´t think the 100 MHz will do that much difference in the speed. More important is which type of display you want. 4:3 and 1400x1050 or 16:10 1280x1024....

Take a look at this
http://www.encke.net/encke/modules.p...q=getit&lid=11
it's a PDF that describes how to perform a CPU change...have a look, you might
find all the info you need

That´s what I thought... I think that the 15,4" has better looks, but don´t know if the 15,1" has better "working space", see what I mean? Hummm...

Forum member webweaver is a reseller with some good deals. You can PM him.

starpcs.com and stipc.com are also resellers. They are a lot more expensive than ESCTech for whatever reason.

I have the M6800N (15.1" SXGA+ 4:3 display). For my use I prefer the vertical workspace afforded by the 4:3 display, as it facilitates quick scroll/scan through documentation. I also like to have browser/teminal windows open side by side, however, and the 16:10 might have an advantage here for poorly designed sites where resizing your browser window doesn't work well. I think the 16:10 may well be preferable if you're more heavily into gaming and/or watching DVD's. So looks to me to mostly be a personal preference thing functionality wise, with not clear advantage one way or the other. Asthetically speaking, however, I think the silver trim around the LCD on the 15.1" display versions looks pretty cool.

I'll PM him and take a look at the two sites. Hopefully I find something... never imagine looking for a notebook could be so difficult!

Sorry I missed this earlier. Been a busy boy as of late.

My 15.1" SXGA+ display does exhibit the brightness gradient defect. To the best of my knowledge this issue only affects the 15.1" model. No dead pixels that I've been able to discern. I run 1400x1050, and other than the gradient issue (which I will RMA), the display is pretty nice.

I'm running the 1.6GHz Bania. I'm not special enough to have access to an engineering release of the Dothan. Bummer, cuz I think that extra meg of cache is going to be sweet.

Justin2-- whilst that puppy is in the shop, maybe you can get a peek at the display. Has anyone figured out who's making them yet??

IceKiller-- I'm dual booting FreeBSD on mine. The 1.6 crunches source code like no tomorrow. Have yet to bring KDE up becuase I've been too busy. The next release of XFree86, 4.4, is scheduled for release in early '04 and presently at RC3. It will support the M10, so don't worry about having to buy any of the commercial distro's to get the Xi Graphics server. I also don't have acpi working yet with FBSD, but also haven't yet tried, and just disable acpi at boot time.

batrachomachia - That PDF is excellent ! I wish I had seen it a week ago instead of fumbling around...
I noticed that the PDF is chapter 5, is there any more of the manual that we can download.

thanks,

I just joined the club ... I'm in Taipei right now and picked up my Asus M6N.

I've only seen it in 15.4" WXGA here and the higher end model comes configured with 512 RAM, 60G 4200RPM HD, Centrino 1.5, and DVD/CD-RW for around $1750 US including tax and 2 yr global warranty. Luckily I finally found a store in Taiwan that was willing to upgrade the HD to a 7200RPM and upgrade to 1G RAM ... if they touched anything else they said it would void the warranty ... so my walk out price with these upgrades including tax and 2 yr global warranty was about $2000US. First day with her today ... NO dead pixels

Any suggestions in regards to charging the battery to get the best results?
