Acer Ferrari 4005wlmi Or Rock Direct Pegasus 650

Thread Starter
I wonder if anybody had some comparisons on these two machines, I'm interested in both but cant decide.....

acer:
AMD Turion ML37 Processor 2.0GHz
1024MB DDR SDRAM
100GB Hard Drive
DVD Dual Layer Drive
DVD- and large Dual Layer DVD
15.4" SWXGA+ Widescreen TFT Screen
ATI Mobility Radeon X700 PCI-E 128MB dedicated graphics
Integrated gigabit LAN
Integrated wireless 802.11g LAN - Call for advice on Wireless networking
Integrated Bluetooth
Integrated 5-in-1 card reader – reads Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, MultiMediaCard, SD Memory Card and XD Picture Card

rock:
Intel® Pentium® M 770 (2.13GHz)
1Gb DDR RAM
15.4” WSXGA+ TFT
100Gb (5400rpm) HDD
8x DVD Writer
256Mb MXM nVideo 6600 or 128 MXM ATI MOBILITY RADEON X700 (IM guessing this is the same as the acer, not sure which is better nvideo or ati?)

also the rock offers a unique VGA switch that allows you to turn off the powerful X700 graphics when not in use giving up to 3 hours battery life.

also, when you need it most, the Pegasus 650 will over clock your processor by 5% giving you more punch for free!

appreciate your thoughts

thanks James

would you care to post some pics of the "rock" so we know whats going on. From the specs the rock is better...(with the 256mb nvidia). but overall...i we'll need to know the OEM and the PRICE to make the call.

anyway, its a Uniwill 259EN3. Not a bad system, but from what i've read the battery life is disappointing.

the build quality from both companies is only so-so market average if you will.

if you got that much money to blow, look at ASUS and Sager as possible alternatives

You shouldn't be here.... you should be here .

And I disagree with "so-so build quality..."

i own a uniwill computer and speak from experience. i also happen to own an IBM thinkpad (pre-lenovo) and an Asus and the Uniwill is clearly of lesser quality than the above. I never said it was crap, just not among the best.

The unique VGA switch to turn off the x700 is in almost all ATI laptops, it is called powerplay. It shuts off most of the video card when you are on battery, because you usually don't game on battery. This setting can be changed if you are gaming on battery, and the Acer can get 3+ hours of battery easy. I would also say the Acer is not of so-so build qualtiy. It is definatly better than so-so, especially comapred to all the Dells I see every day at school.

FutureAsusOwner you are incorrect. In the case of the Uniwill 259EN3 there are actually TWO GPUS....the dedicated Nvidia Go 6600 and Intel's GMA 900 integrated on the mobo. Powerplay only allows for the dynamic adjustment of the GPU core and memory clocks.

That being said, the Uniwill is a decent system but I have also gotten direct reports of lackluster battery rundown times.

It doesn't shut off 'most' of the video card, it switches it off completely and boots on the integrated graphics, if memory serves.

icetea got it. 2 GPUs, 1 for games, 1 for battery life. not "powerplay". furthermore this is an nvidia card, not an ati.

unleaded...thanks for confirming that battery life is sub-par on the uniwill. i knew i read it somewhere, have you reviewed this system in the past?

Sorry, my mistake, but if you still only get 3 hours without the x700 running, then that still is as god as the Acer, and the Acer leaves the x700 in control.

I never actually got around to writing a review of this system though I did perform some benchmarks. Unfortunately, a battery rundown test was not performed so I can not speak to it directly. I did receive some feedback from a few customers about poor battery life, however.

There's a review of the Rock Direct 650 here, which mentions battery life tests:

moved to Notebook General

Go for the MSI-1039 instead

For that price I would also consider the Asus V71V:

With a M770, 1 gb ram, and 6600 go £1047 exc. VAT.
