Voodoo M355 Envy.. I have no clue what's going on..

Hey guys,

So... I own a Voodoo Envy m355 laptop with the following specs:

Pentium m 1.6Ghz
512mb DDR RAM
40Gb 5400 rpm HD
ATI mobility Radeon 9000 64Mb DDR
CD-RW / DVD-ROM combo
Built in wireless, LAN, modem, sound... etc.

When it's plugged in to the power and nothing else, my computer will POST then restart, then POST, then restart... and so on. When it's plugged into nothing, it will POST, then do the windows loading screen for a bit, then when it's done with that, it will restart... POST.. windows... restart... and so on.

Here's the catch. When I power it on with the power unplugged, and mash F8 during boot-up, i can get it to start in safe mode, with networking. Once i do that, it runs fine, and the internet works.

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong with my system, how much it would cost to fix, or how much I could sell it off for if I don't want to do the work myself? My Area-51m m5500 is getting here tomorrow, so I'll be ditching this thing soon (albeit sadly).

Please help!.. also...

I'm looking for a good wireless mouse that I can use for everday applications as well as gaming (meaning no half-hour wake up time). I don't like the MX1000 because the adapter for it is huge and I want something I can carry around easily. Any suggestions?

On the problems with your Voodoo-
Sounds like it could be anything. To narrow the issue down, reformat the hard drive or test it in a different laptop. If it's possible, try a different power adapter and battery.

Hey,

I took out the hard drive, and instead of saying "operating system not found" or whatever, it just keeps rebooting and POSTing. Also, I tried to load the recovery CDs and boot from those, but as long as the laptop is plugged into the power, it just says booting from cd-rom then restarts.. I'll try another AC Adapter, and see how that works.

Hmm....if memory serves me right, it should say "No OS disk found" and sit there, not reboot. That narrows it down....don't bother reformatting your HD, it's not the problem.

It's certainly a hardware problem of some sort, but I can't tell what exactly. Try a different AC adapter and battery if possible. If it's still under warranty, get Voodoo to fix it for you...otherwise, assuming you don't have a bunch of spare parts specifically for that laptop laying around, it sounds like you're screwed.

is it me or could this simply be a overheating issue? I mean if it powers up in safe mode where the computer doesn't really heat up that much, wouldn't that be telling us that maybe the failsafe for the cpu is setting this thing to reboot. Maybe you could try opening it up and checking the fans and reapplying AS5 if you haven't or have already. Just a thought.

hmmm if it was a working unit, you may be able to get an OK amount for it, however if its the hardware thats bad, it will really take a hardcore DIY person to be willing to buy it for anything substantial.

if you get the G7 or the MX1000/keyboard (MX5000 Laser?) you get a slim adaptor(like a small thumbdrive). i have the MX1000 and it is absolutely amazing.
edit: im thinking your motherboard is at fault here. power connector and hdd controller may both be bad.

its a little late for me to reply, but if you still have the m355 it sounds like it may be a failed/bad ram

if the computer was working fine then chances are thats what it is, they can ware out at any time. in some cases instantly. but useally you will see degraded system proformance untill you cant do anything with it at all.
