Since A64 i bet they spent a year or 2 on dual core -- and since dual core they've been working on quad core. They've had lots of projects. And i bet we'll definetly see more than 2-5% on AM2.
Also remember AMD's smaller R&D has been working on Socket F and S1 (for dual core turions and quad core servers (x8) ).
So, overall i dont think its fair to say they havn't been busy. But its also not fair to say they've been completly ontop of the game. They're in a tough spot... its hard to maintain the number one spot in this kind of situation. After the second round of benchmarks its hard to deny that conroe will be quiet the chip, but its also not easy to count out the utterly astounding ingenuity AMD sometimes is capable of weilding.
