I've always been a big fan of Crucial ram, however, the price for their sodimms are really up there. I bought some el-cheapo ram for my 7405gx awhile back and have been pretty pleased with it. As I've considered upgrading to a newer model to get extra processing speed, I've given some thought to buying new ram as well. Do you feel that ram brand makes a difference? Do you think some ram chips are better than others? I've had good luck and stability with my el-cheapo ram (which is a first for me, actually), but if I do a full-on upgrade, I don't want to skimp. What do you think?

The main thing to consider is timings. SOme brands are inherently better than others from a percentage DOA standpoint, but to RAM modules from different companies with the same timings should perform almost identical. Warranty may also be something to consider. Most (even the el cheapos) have a lifetime warranty now. I would definately make sure to get one with that, as it shouldn't really effect the price much.

My recommendation is always to search for compatibility if possible. Search for posts from people who've used a specific cheap type on that motherboard(for desktops) or laptop unit.
On desktops...when overclocking the memory, it might make a difference...but for laptops, you're just concerned about compatibility. Obviously, if your machine takes PC4200 DDR2, any PC4200 DDR2 chip should work...but that's not always entirely true. Some modules just won't work with some systems, for whatever reason.
When I bought mine, I search for my model name on this forum and a few other laptop forums and found posts by people who had successfully used a certain Transcend memory module. It was cheap. There were also two versions...one had Samsung chips, the other had different ones. The former worked well...the latter was known to cause problems...so I spent $3.00 more per chip(1GB chips) and bought the Samsung module versions. They were considerably cheaper than other RAM modules(especially Crucial) and work perfectly.
Do some searches on your machine and find what people have successfully used in the past.
