ok guys my system is set up as follows
normal acer install factory settings.
enabled network booster and performance booster in empowering software.
removed all traces of Norton antivirus
Installed AVG
The system is an Acer Aspire 5672WLMi 1.66duo 2gig ram, 120gig hdd 256native/512mb Ati X1400
3dmark06 scores:
Shader Model 2.0 Score: 309
HDR/Shader Model 3.0 Score: 356
Cpu Score: 1344
Overall Score: 938
my reckoning is that with a half decent shader model 3.0 score this GPU can keep up with current games, where as older GPU's that might get much bigger scores in SM2.0 may get an overall higher score (like my desktop Nvidia 6600 did) but they can't support the new shaders, so will lose out on detail.

p.s. I also checkout a Travelmate 8204 and the overall score on that one was 1293
