now they are all 5400, but when I ordered there were also two 4200's and a 7200 as an option as well.

the $300 option for the 2GB of ram is for 533MHz, I got 2GB of 667MHz for $250.

I guess 5,400 would help on the battery life... oh well... You ordered yours on 03-10-2006 .... and 20 days +/- later they're "only" showing 5,400 drives?

(I hope that maybe they will put a 7,200 in, you know Under Promise/Over Deliver... But I doubt that will be the case.:-( Paid $75 extra for the 100 gig)...

BTW: How much "extra" did you end up paying over the base HD for the 7,200, 100 gig drive?

On the ram, the HP upgrade is a rip off, besides the cost is way "up" there, they keep the 512, so your paying $300 for 1.5gig.

Here's some info on doing a FRESH install of XP PRO on a dv5000t that appears to me hardware wise to be very much the same as the dv8000t, the dv8000t having a bigger screen, bigger hard drives, Look about 2/3 the way down for some very interesting info: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=47042

I just looked at the configuration page I printed out when I ordered, there were no 4200rpm drives availible, my mistake. here were the options availible on 3/9/06.

80GB 5400 $0
100GB 5400 $75
100GB 7200 $135
160GB 5400 (2x 80 GB) $175
200GB 5400 (2x 100GB) $275

baltimoredsmguy,

$135 extra for the 7,200... I might have gone for that.. Wondering why they have taken that option OFF the option list? Problems with heat, battery life, or does HP add and remove items at will? If you can't tell I'm sort of pissed at HP finding out a 7,200 was offered and now it's not.

Let me ask you this since you may know, where are some places to BUY a 100gig 7,200 SATA drive. I did some searching today, one place only having a 40 gig... (Related to that, I wonder hold BIG a hd the bios will support? Have you run accross any info about that? Hard drives keep getting bigger and cheaper. I'm thinking a year from now, (2) 250gig's...)

BTW: I noticed in your sig you'er running 2 gig of DRR2 667 spec ram, and I think you mentioned something about overclocking at one time....

Is there an option in the bios to adjust the ram timmings?
If there is, running 667 on a 533 bus is a good idea ... if not then the 667 is sort of a waste $$$ wise. I'm debating which ram to buy that's why I bring it up.

I have overclocked systems in the past... just wondering the pros of spending more money than needed if the bios won't allow an adjustment to the ram timmings.

I guess I could be said for higher spec'd ram that you'll probally have less chance of problems with it over time, running the 667 at 533. That's the only reason I could see, unless the price differance was real close.

I think that running Async the RAM on an Intel rig is a waste of money. It's probably a waste of money the Intel rig itself... but that's another story.

Intel has a chipset, so to archieve the best performance the mem will run like the FSB which means that if the max speed is of the chipset is 533 and your mem is 677 the chipset will low the speed to 533. And if You can change the mem speed to 677 in BIOS that means running Async which means You'll loose performance which means it's a waste of money!

This has been done in the past and will be done in the future... to offer speed that You can use!!! It's like buying an 6-cyl car to find out that 4-cyl are working!!!

It's such a shame that whoever wants an AMD laptop with dedicated nVidia video card has to put $2500 on it!!!

Well, I guess AMD is doing good money!!!

One thing to be wary of if you're hoping to add a second HD after purchase: I've been checking all of the forums I can find with info on the dv8000t and found a post stating there is no mounting bracket in the laptop for a second HD unless you order your laptop with a 2nd drive. The poster wanted to add a second HD after purchse and discovered there was no mouting bracket in the 2nd drive bay. He called HP to order one but no one could find a part number for an add-on bracket. Bottom line from that poster, if you don't order your laptop with dual HDs, you can't add a second one later.

what do you mean mounting bracket? the metal cage that the drive sits in?

baltimoredsmguy:

Re: Aftermarket Drive. Yes, it's the cage that contains and mounts the drive in the bay. If you'll go to the ZDNet laptop user reviews for the dv8000t, ebina1 describes his experience trying to obtain a mount from HP for an aftermarket HD. They were not able to find a part number for the mount which, according to them, means it doesn't exist. It sounds like things got a bit heated between them. His review was complimentary of the laptop itself, but he wanted to give a heads-up to anyone wanting to install an aftermarket HD. I opened the drive bay on my own 8000t and the HD mount is made of some very thin metal. If you absolutely needed an aftermarket drive, I'll bet you could take the mount to a machine shop and have a copy made pretty cheaply. I did not pull the drive out myself to check for a part number on the mount, so I can't verify ebina1's story.

the drives for sale on newegg all apear to come with mounting cages. In other words, I think that the cages are a product of the hard drive manufacturer(eg: Hitachi)

On the second hard drive frame....

I received a dv8000t, ordered with a single drive because there's no way I was going to pay HP the $$$ they wanted for the second drive.

Bad news is the "frame" is not shipped with the notebook, it's shipped with a replacement drive from HP. As of April 11, 2006 when I talked with a case manager there is no parts listing for the "frame".
(How convenient... We can't sell you just the frame, but we can sell you the drive with the frame for .....What's the limit on your credit card again sir?, HP rep says with a big smile on his face, knowing that most people will be forced for buy that second hard drive thru HP, instead of making their own bracket.)

To be fair to HP this may just be a temporary issue, the bracket being made available soon. (I doubt it)

I think HP should ship a bracket to anyone who requests one for FREE, since it should have been inculded, since most people would be forced to buy the second hard drive from HP to get the frame.

Good news is it looks like it will be EASY to make a bracket up.

I bought mine for the home desk without the intention of it traveling, but I have seen it stuffed into a messenger bag twice now for various excursions. Hence, I would also like to get a protective case.

any other backpacks you can think of. I'm going to be a CS student next year at cal poly so anything that is lightweight and has airflow on the back like swiss would be preferred. I'll check out the Targus at a store with my lappy as I've heard of it before also.
