The sound is best described as "Crackling". Sounds almost like a fire burning lol, anyway this sound is only heard in games, wether it be on my laptop's speakers, headset and speakers plugged into the jack, its is HIGHLY annoying and i can't seem to find the problem.

Has anyone else experienced or heard of this problem? can i fix it? i'm worried it might be the connection from the headphone jack to the mobo might be f'ed, it not loose or anything but its the only thing i can think of, also i'm running the audio drivers from the dell site.

anyone have any ideas? because i'm

If you can hear it on your speakers and headphone's it's not your headphones.

Does it happen in every single game you have?

Does it happen in the games with speakers and headphones or just headphones?

Does windows startup and shutdown and all the sounds in windows sound normal with speakers and headphones?

It happens in pretty much every game, i have noticed i don't get the crackling in Counter-Strike 1.6 though.

it happens in games with both headphones and the laptop's speakers, so i don't think its the headphone jack.

when i listen to music and whatnot i don't get the crackling, movies either, just games.

Very strange problem. Sounds like your sound chip might be busted, but then why would it only malfunction in games? Odd.

Its a problem with BF2.

EAX doesn't work well in most games unless you have a Creative card, so disable it. Hopefully that will fix your problem.

um.....seems a bit harsh.

The eound in fear is a POS. even with the sound setup i have on the desktop in my sig it crackles. And since you have integrated sound, don't expect a hell of a lot.

I hve this cracking sound problem!! its so annoying and it comes from my speakers no matter if its headphones or what. its with games, music, movies eveything. i have driver version 5.10 of the sigmatel high def audio codec. is there anything i can download to fix it??
same problem here, i have tried a couple of sigmatel drivers, the audigy upgrade stuff and nothing works, the sounds is fine except in some games, and yes i think the problem lies with EAX or OpenAL . i have ut2004 and it allows me to disable EAX yet the crackling remains even if i use the safe audio option in game. same thing for BF2, doesnt matter what option i chose i get crackling all the time. quite annoying. so any ideas are welcome. im going to try those modded drivers now, lets see if i can work something up.

I had this problem in UT2004. Solved it by switching the sound engine to software 2D (I think the default was Miles 3D). Essentially, do the audio in software, output stereo. Simple, works. Possible CPU performance hit, but it sounds exactly the same (minus the crackling) and UT runs fast enough that a bit more CPU usage doesn't matter.
