Gateway NX860XL- w/7800 is this GTX

Anyone know if Gateway is shipping the GTX version or just the 7800. Trying to guess what the 3dmark will be on this - compared to a xps 170 with GTX.
They don't specify it as a GTX...so I'd assume it's not. If they were offering a 7800GTX, I'm sure they'd tell you.
Pretty sure it is just the 7800.
My brother just bought one & is very happy with it. Don't see any option for the 7800 GTX on their site either.

Did he buy a NX860 and did he already receive it?

I don't understand gateways mentality. Why not offer the option of the GTX? Stupid really.

I'm pretty sure Gateway has not shipped the 860XL with the 7800 GPU yet - I'm told the GPU has been on back order... I was given a 3 week delivery date and also told the GPU may end up being the GTX version. Will have to wait and see.

I'm hoping the display and D-Core will make a nice performance improvement over my Dell M170. Look forward to running 3dMarks against both in comparision. I like the design of the Gateway box better than my M170.

Possibly due to cost/availability concerns?

Come on...this machine is not billed as an extreme gaming solution. Most of the customers are NOT buying it for that purpose. So if they can keep the price down $50 or something by using the regular 7800 as opposed to the GTX...why not? Also, if the 7800 is on backorder...the GTX might even be more difficult to get in volume. If nvidia couldn't gaurantee a certain level of product, perhaps that steered their decision?

Makes sense to me.

Oh reeeeeally...

http://www.gateway.com/home/products/gaming.shtml

"Our extreme PCs give you monster gameplay action and hardcore graphics gone supernatural"

So... not only is it being billed as "extreme" but also monsterous, "supernatural" and "practically diabolical".

OK, cool.
Thought it would still take a while before they would be delivered.

How well does it perform?

And he's probably not willing to have a look at the inside of it, to check if it's got an MXM Type3 slot, just like it predecessors?
He is very happy with it. I am trying to get him to run some benchmarks, but he has been too busy thus far. As for peeking inside....he is not the adventurous type like we are!! Wouldn't it say somewhere in the specs if it was MXM? Haven't read anything to this effect.
BTW, anybody know why suddenly bluetooth is no longer an option on this machine??? Can no longer find that option on the specs page...........

Isn't gateway trying to atleast compete with dell? Sure! So if they are they should give the option of the card regardless of 50 dollars.

I agree...

It's funny, every laptop I am considering is missing one or two things that are deal breakers for me.

The XPS is missing a docking option. Deal breaker.

The Sony's (that aren't out yet) are missing a decent graphics card. Deal breaker.

The Gateway (which is actually a front runner), has everything, EXCEPT a single notch up on the graphics power... Deal breaker... though of them all, the Gateway is the closet to "I can live with it" status.

Come on Gateway, you can do it!

I gotta agree with you. I have to say I honestly never really understood gateway's marketing strategy. Why are they always playing catch up (and not that well at that) with dell. I mean dell is winning with gaming notebookbooks, all other notebooks, the xps series desktops, monitors (now with the massive 30") and pretty much everything else in between.

I mean I love my m680x. It has enough graphics power for me and a great glossy wxga screen. Now would I not like a 6800go or ultra? Sure! I could settle for the mid range x700, but I'm sure that there are many out there that simply wont!

The NX850/M680 specs didn't mention MXM either, but they do have it.
Since the NX860/M685 uses the same chassis I was hoping it would use an MXM card as well.

Don't know about the bluetooth-question, could be that there wasn't enoug room to add an internal USB-connector.

You can get a 6800 with 256MB and an 7800 with 256MB, it will run every current game just fine, so why make an issue out of this?

If it's really that important you can get a chassis that supports MXM Type3 for sure and go hunting for a 7800 Go GTX or wait a little till they are readily available.
It's not an issue for current games, it's an issue for games to be released in the future.

Because notebooks only have limited upgradeability it's not unwise to try to max out the spec on things like graphic cards in order to give yuor notebook longer legs.

Get a chassis with an MXM type3 slot, like I suggested, and as long as the heat generated by your newer graphics card doesn't exceed the max heat the GPU cooler can't handle you're fine.

+There's always a reason NOT to buy something, Turion X2 around the corner, same for meron, etc.
