The intel graphics will eat away some of the system ram (up to 224 meg of it I believe), so it's another example of the importance of more ram for you.
Also on the note of integrated graphics.... they really are pretty weak performers in games. I can't say I'd recommend the 6400 to anyone planning to game until at least the ATI x1400 gets added as an option.
Why would an integrated card use so much memory - does this happen only when playing games?

General question about Dual core - for laptops, just how often do people multitask compared to using desktop pc's? Or is the 'duo' mostly a marketing thing?

If your choice is between a faster processor and more RAM, I'd purchase the faster processor and upgrade the RAM through a site like NewEgg. IMHO.

Guys, the decision i'm not able to take is: spend some fussy time with 1.83 512mb or rest in peace with 1.66 1gb-but then the upgrade issue crops up.

Tell me, are 1.66 or 1.83 dual cores equivalent to 2-2.2 ghz processors? MAy be that'd help me, coz whenever i think about 1.66, slow processing speed blocks my mind from thinking further...

My core Solo 1.66 is far from slow. 1:27 2M SuperPi.

a 1.66 duo is easily going to give you a better experience than a 3GHz pentium, if that's your frame of reference.

Let us know what you decide, there Humbert. I'm interested to see how you feel about whatever you finally go with.

That's interesting, I'm replacing my Inspiron 1100 [2GHz Celeron] with a 1.66 Duo. I was expecting major improvements in multi-tasking but not single tasking.

Needless to say, I'll have to run some benches on the applications that matter to me: PTGui, RSE, Photoshop, Enblend. Very common to develop RAWs in RSE and stitch them in PTGui at the same time. The Celeron just crawls.

There are few situations where a 10% faster processor will benenfit you more than an upgrade from 512 to 1 GB. There will be specific tasks and benchmarks the 1.83 would be betteDarthPiercer on, but for your actual day-to-day use, I have no doubts that the 1.66 with a gig will be better.
DarthPierce,

I specific question, if you please . . .

On my E1505 [1.66 Duo, 950 GMA], it will come with a single 512MB stick of 533MHz DDR2. I eventually want to end up with 2GB of DDR2, either 533 or 667. Back in Dec, DDR2 was going for $60-80 per 1GB SODIMM, not today.

Therefore two scenarios:
  1. Buy a single 512 for the short term, ~$40 or
  2. Go for the gusto and ponyup ~$300 for 2 - 1GB 667MHz SODIMMs

How closely do I have to match the included 512 included by Dell?

Is the 667 worth it over it over 533?

I often spend 5 min to over an hour doing a single stitch, the result is a single image, obviously not taxing the 950 GPU. Don't game so FPS is meaningless.

Thanks,
Hermit

If you're not gaming you won't see much (if any) difference between the 533 and 667MHz ram (as long as you have matched 2 of either). So if you can save some money, go for the 533.

If your images that you're stitching are big (sounds like they are) then I think you'll see a pretty sizeable benefit from a lot of RAM.

If you're buying ram from someone other than dell make sure you are getting laptop ddr2, regular ddr2 is very different in size.

I think you will see a pretty significant increase over a 2GHz celeron even in single-threaded applications.

Darthpiece and guys, i've finally decided.
Its 1.86 Core Duo and 512MB DDR2 i'm going with, rest of the config remains same, not to mention a 1680 X 1100 TrueLife Ultrabright SXGA screen .
I felt its better to compensate with performance (hope not that much...) when i'll be goin for an upgrade pretty soon (~1yr). Just hope this machine wont trouble me that much. Ordered it on 16th, lets see how things go....

Are you saying you'll upgrade the ram in ~1yr, or upgrade the system (new processor/new lappy/something else) in ~1yr?

What do you mean by "better to compensate with performance"?

good luck!

Yeah, i'll upgrade the RAM within this year.
And regarding the configuration, i decided that its better to go with 1.83 core duo, and 512mb ram because its better to go with a good processor rather than very good ram, just because i'll have more options later. I hope this machine wont trouble me that much, ( as the experience i've had wit 512 mb 2.8 gigs desktop, works somewhat smoothly), as its a core duo, so, a 10% increase may somewhat compensate for 100% increase in ram.
Thats it, a quick upgrade later this year and a better processor was all i had in my mind before ordering the machine.
Lets see how this system works, any reviews from ppl withthe same configuration?
