How about the 5320 as a work laptop?

Hello!

Thank for all the folks on these forums that have taken the time to post thoughts, reviews, grips, and kudos. It really helps when people are taking the time research options for buying thier next computer.

I have, for the most part, decided to purchase the Sager 5320 for my next laptop, but maybe for a bit different reason that most on these forums. I'd really appreciate some input from the folks that have used this machine over the last 5/6 months whether it be good or bad. I have read through as much on these forums as I could find regarding this machine, and these are things still sort of hanging out there for me:

My planned config is as follows, which will be bought thorugh PCTorque (not just saying that because this is their forum):
WUXGA (1920 x 1200) {still thinking about downing it to the WSXGA...)
PM 760 2.0 Ghz
x700 256M Video
2048 MB DDR2 Memory
60 GB 7200 RPM HDD (don't need a lot of HDD space because most files are on servers)
DL DVD
Win XP PRO SP2
ABG Wireless
Bluetooth

1. I am an architect and spend a lot of time in 3D drawings and Cad programs, which is why I am looking at a higher end graphics/processor/HDD/memory type machine. It make sense to me that a great gaming machine would work just fine for my needs. Has anyone done the same? Do you use this machine for SketchUP, 3Ds, Maya, etc.? Anyone see any issues with working on large 3D files (1 GB +).

2. The audio issue with the jack isn't a huge deal for me, as I don't use my laptop for sound much...I have a Roku hooked up to my NAS and stereo for music and would rather use a good MP3 player than the laptop, but I still don't want to buy a POS and if I do listen to music on the laptop, it will be through headphones. It sounds like dissabling the IR port is the key to making the "chirping" go away on the headphones? Anyone have this not be the case?

3. I seems that memory upgrades on PCTorque are cheaper than other places; is that because it is of a lesser quality, or they just charge less?

4. Any thoughts on the screen res? I am a little worried about getting the WUXGA and finding it too small for my eyes, then downing it to make it legible and not running at native resolution. Has anyone gotten th WUXGA and had to adjust it down and it still look great? There is a good chance I'll end up getting a 21" widescreen for work while in the office, which is why i really wanted a lappy with the DVI out (also for my 42" HDTV at home ), so it may be a moot point, but thoughts still appreciated.

5. I'm curious as to if anyone else has thought this as well: I have read and read about how "boutique" laptops are so much more expensive than Dell, HP, insert name of big company here, but I don't understand it. For a similarly configured machine (memory, HDD, and video card), machines from the big names are WAY more expensive. You just can't beat the bang you get for the buck, even for the machines you get from AW.

6. Lastly, I have also been looking at the Dell D810, AW M5500, Prostar 3742 (same machine as the 3880 Sager, I think), Sony SZ140 (good video with small screen). Does anyone have experience with these machines (or others) that may fit my needs better?

Thanks so much in advance. I'll definately return the favor and post my purchase process, reviews, and experiences here as I have them to give a little something back to the community.

Regards,
Brian

for your resolution question:

i had WSXGA on my 5720 [17"] and i still thought text was too small for me. I think WSXGA on a 15.4 would be more reasonable, WUXGA is overkill and it would probably be impossible to work comfortably on it ... if your using it for work then your porbably going to be staring at it all day. Have you had expereince w/ WSXGA or WUXGA panels before? if you havent seen one, id recommend you do before dropping big money ... you might find it too fine for your eyes ... you dont want unncessary eye strain.

Just remember, you can alway adjust text sizes and the like. i run my system at 1600x1200, (basically the same as uxga's 1920x1200, but on a 3:4 screen)

All i did was resize a few things to make it more comfortable for me. It is awesom to have the extra workspace and resolution for 3ds max, and autocad. Just make sure that the graphics card you pick can handle it. many cannot do the high resolutions, and kepp up with realtime shaders, especially in max.

But, i was just at comp usa, and the normal wxga screen still looked absolutely fantastic. i suggest you go look at them in person at a best buy or circuit city, and make your own choice. I must admitt though, i am thinking twice about paying for the uxga screen now that i saw how nice the standard ones are.....

Thanks for the resolution input, both of you. My wife has a 15" Dell that 1400x1050, and it is just about right. I have no idea where I can find a 15.4" notebook with WUXGA res locally. As far as I know, they really only show up in the boutique/gamer laptops, and Fry's and Circuit City don't carry them as far as I know. Any idea where I could look at something like that? (I am in Portland, OR, just in case you know of any place).

I know i can adjust the WUXGA down to WSXGA dimensions if I want to, but I know some machines just don't render so well at anything other than native resolution. So, I was curious as to whether or not the 5320 in particular (with the 256 x700) could be adjusted down and still look stellar. I am leaning

I am guessing that the x700/256 GPU can handle just about anything 3D I can throw at it...at least as well as anything I am going to find in a 15.4" notebook or smaller. 17" is just too big for me...in fact, if I could find a 14" with the same video card in it, I would seriously consider getting it. I am a little worried about the ~8 lbs this machine is going to be anyway.

thanks again,
BW
