My AW51m came! 15.4 Saucer Silver - My comments

~(Listen to my story)~

[NOTE] Apologies in advanced. I don't have a digital camera and the only one I could rely on is the one on my Motorola A920 Mobile Phone/PDA. So most photos aren't 100% clear nor are they detailed.

Managed to heave the box up the stairs to my house [I live in a flat]. Bigger than I thought it was, it can nearly contain my TV! Excuse the socks there, I forgot to put away my washing up.

! Finally, opened the box. First view/look. Backpack + some accessory box, which contained my mouse, phoneline, manuals, CDs, and extras [lock, T-Shirt]

Laid out my stuff. Notice the cap there that I ordered, dunno why but I felt like having one.

After removing that box and the bag, inside the great big cardboard ARK is the treasure!!!! ~

*Blood Pressure Rising* - After a struggle with it I managed to load it out of the box.

Like a snake, he strikes!!!!!

GO! GO! GO!!

It's opened ...... ! *purrs*

Closed it, and put the cup I ordered behind it. As well as the power cables, remote and stuff.

The cup/mug/thing I ordered. Pretty big this is, and quite unique too. I'll explain below.

Top of the cup, closed.

Top of the cup, slided open. It seems this cup allows liquid to be stored in there like a bottle, and as the little note says, allows to keep liquids COOL or HOT, depending on how you put it in there first of course. Say, you wanna keep your tea warm, it will do it for you. Or, you want your drink to stay cool, it will do it for you. The top, I showed 2 pics, on purpose. The first pic is when the slide is closed. The 2nd pic is when the slide is opened. This seals the liquid in and once you drink from it, closing it back and should you knock it over, it won't spill.

What is cool is, I ordered @ the 14th and got it today @ the 22nd. This took a total of 8 days!!!! But to go into more detail, here's what actually happened:

14th - Placed Order
15th - Had to confirm with Credit Card company
16th - PHASE 2

What amazes me is that it only took less than SIX working days for it to reach me, MUCH faster than the predicted 10-15 [not including Sundays]. It should've GOT to me at the 21st, but I -wasn't- home to collect it, I was working. I missed it my 25 minutes that day, they left a note telling me what time they came and my tracking number, the note tells me to phone the office to re-arrange delivery, which they promptly did and fast too. Phoned them 8am this morning and it came by 12:30pm.

I set the thing up and everything, but the only "latest" game I got is Command and Conquer : Generals/Zero Hour. I don't always play games, but so far, no problems with it. The screen MAY look small, to all those people reading this, but seriously, it's bigger than I thought it would be, a 16.1 screen is not -really- needed unless you like big screens, this 15.4 I'm very happy with. Here's a picture of it compared to my LCD monitor [15 inch].

NOTE: I nearly had a heart attack then, because when I went to pick it up, it nearly fell down the side [notice that I balanced it on top of my CD cases and other objects] ; took me a while to recover as I rescued it from death/injury.

I'll be happy to answer any questions should people want to ask.

wow sweet, i'm getting the same thing, hmm what questions do i have, lets see

does the bag come with this?
what specs is it?
does software come preloaded?
does the structure of the case feel strong as opposed to plastic cheap feeling?

thanks

Bag? Nope, I brought it seperately, it was one of the optional options

Specs ; what you expect really, P4 3Ghz, 512mb Ram, Radeon 9600 128, and everything else , 60gb Drive and XP pro. No wireless, don't need it. CDRW/DVD combo.

Software : Powerstrip, PowerDVD, Quake 3 Demo (I think the engineers use this to test the power of this thing), Active Mail Checker, C-Media something, Remote Control Admin, Nero, as far as I see.

Structure? This things feel tight, not cheap at all. I begin to think it's something along the lines of metal. Everytime I touch the side of it [lid, whatever, everywhere] the thing is quite "cold". And i believe I could KO someone with this laptop, and crush other smaller puny laptops too.

You will not be disappointed with the case construction of the Area-51m. A friend of mine has the gamer version and I have the Area-51:Sentia. The construction of both are rigid with no case flex. No wobble on the LCD when it is open. The keyboard is tight and responsive, no "dipping" feeling.

Preloaded software? Do you really need that. I bet you have a stash of CD's and downloads ready to install in this which will easily over run whatever else may already be installed in there.

I also found a way to save another $70 or so. Alienware has affiliate program which gets you commission if someone purchases through your user ID. The price for the purchaser does not increase any but the commission is paid out to the affiliate.

Maybe we can start a program here to help each other and those such as EmeraldIce who is feverishly saving up to get his Alienware. I signed up for mine and the link to purchase through my ID is on my site at SLACKER.NET It would be nice to see this link work for me. BUt it may be better to direct it to another who may need it more than I do.

EmeraldIce? Let us know how we can help brother!
I believe this forum has it in them to help others. We do have the capacity to do so and the mods I'm sure would support this.

*Maybe a sticky to sponsor 1 person at a time. Make this like make a wish foundation, Alienware style!

Robo,
Excellent review man. Thanks for the pics of that nifty cup! I've got to have one now!

Please update us as you get more comfortable with the laptop as to your thoughts on performance and craftsmanship.

Again, thanks for the post!

How's it for gaming?

I'm looking for a laptop primarily for gaming but don't want the 16.1 inch screen. How's the 15.4 for gaming? I am intrigued by the idea of an upgradeable graphics card.

That camera you have is amazing considering its specs

Is the black thing on the keyboard a piece of fabric or foam?? Can you put it in there when you are not using the notebook? I mean....is it reusable??

Do you get a free mousepad or is it an accessory??
It is very reusable...it is a protective cover that in 9 languages has written on it:
Note
In order to avoid damaging your display we recommend that you position this mat over the keyboard prior to closing your notebook and do not place any objects on the display.

--------I believe this is to prevent keyboard imprints onto the LCD...I have a friend with an HP lappie who threw his away and after some wear and tear he has key imprints on the LCD...
Yep...I use mine every time I close my laptop.
I used a handtowel with my Sager LOL

What about the mousepad? The blue area 51 / mouse combo is very snazzy

!.

Piece of felt works good too. Found out too late on a Dell Latitude but I will be much the wiser when I get my AW!

I think the mouse pad is a free accessory.
Does it matter much? if it's the ink fro mthe keys that should come off with alittle elbow grease... or is it actual physical imprints?
