93XPS mobo replacement

Thread Starter
My PCI slot crapped out on my 93XPS and the dell says I need a mobo replacement.
Funny part is I have a souped up 9300...pin modded and 7800GTX installed
I don't have my old parts
Watcha think the tech is gonna do when he sees inside my system???
I'm hoping he will just chuckle and replace it.

Off to reprint pin-mod diagram for reinstall hahahaha
Tech is supposed to be here Monday
i would at least take out the pinmod.
leave it all in, i want to know the dell rep's reaction
post #4 of 35
lol theyll probably replace the card with a 6800 go, and if the pinmod is still in, replace the cpu aswell.

i bet thats not what you wanted the hear. but its true.
pull the pin leave the 7800 in flash it back to the 9300 A05 bios and let him work he will think the 7800 is cool

I doubt that.

I seriously doubt that too.

If I was in your situation, I'd see if I could have Dell send the parts out rather than send a rep to your house if at all possible. If not I'd just pull out the pin mod. Do you think the Dell rep is going to pay THAT much attention to what he's doing to see that its a 7800gtx in a 9300? Sure, its a different card, but they work on XPS systems too.

Just my opinion.

I would remove the pin mod and leave the rest. Unless the tech is anal then they wont care, they are paid to do a job and they do it, anything more is just extra work for them...
I always ask for a courier to deliver the parts. That way they done see and i get to keep the old one!
Sucks they can't send you an XPS Gen2 motherboard instead. That way you can have the LED's like I got on my i9300. See my post in the sig.

how did the pci slot crap out?

and are you talking mini-pci? or the pci-x?

if it was the pci-x slot, they yes, i imagine they would replace the video. they would see it as the potential cause of the problem.

My tech guy always brings a Service disk with latest Bios, he makes sure it has the latest Bios so watch out for that. Actually ,you'll get your mobo replaced, so I would Change Bios to 9300 and take pinmod out. Hopefully you won't get an Anal guy 'cause of you're video card, Do Bios update in front of him and make sure your pci slot works. I doubt they care as long as they did their job. He'll probably be surprised and ask you how you did it. good luck/

I had mine replaced recently at home due to the head phone connection getting loose (annoying sound on/off on headphones)

I left my 7800 in, in fact had a chat about how I got it from dell and it was covered by laptop warranty and this quickly developed into how fast it was how cool it was etc etc I made sure he took the card out with the heat sink attached so that I didnt have to reapply AS5. He did the same for the processor, so if the wire isnt there, they won't know, and hey certainly won't care. They are not nazis who'll grass you up to dell, just techs paid to replace one part. As long as it works after they are done, they are happy. Stay around and chat. The old motherboard gets binned anyway, I left my M170 bios in it.

The only thing is the new motherboard will be flashed with the latest 9300 bios, that's all

Don't sweat it

Edit: and even though they (dell) are a right royal pain in the arse when ordering, the ease of work of their products and the no quibble warrranty will keep me buying dells in the future (not to mention superior resale value)

ok first of all, most of the techs thatdell sends out are contracted out. I have had my modded 9300 worked on several times by these techs, even had talks about what I modded etc. And like the post above, he said "cool" and "thats extremely inovative how did you figure that out." They are just normal people getting paid like mechanics do, per job and estimated time of install labor for whatever needs replacement. They could care less if you modded your 9300, they are just there to do what they were told to do.

Dont even sweat it, I had the tech replace a keyboard, the mobo gen, and a memory stick. Same guy everytime, and im assuming most could give 2 shits about what you have done.

Good luck

Well I don't know where to start to tell you HOW HORRIBLE this all went. I could write a two page report on all what went wrong here..but I'll make it short so yall still read it.

Tech was cool about pin mod and 7800 GTX. He let me swap the little pin out to the new mobo.
The refurb mobo dell sent wound up being bad. My machine was immidately freezing up on boot after new mobo was installed. The tech blamed the problem on "drivers" and I was forced to wipe my hard drive by the tech and Dell and the machine would still not work despite my protests. The tech left before the windows reinstall and Windows wouldn't install on it so now I'm left with dealing with Dell's indians on the phone.
Windows would freeze up before 9 minutes to compeletion EVERY TIME no matter what we did on it. I even went so far as borrowing a windows professional disk from a friend to prove it was not the disk.
The whole fiasco wound up being with me screwing around with it for 8 + hours, and conculed with me screaming at the top of my lungs at some Dell supervisor telling him that the freaking MOBO was bad, and him telling me it was windows and Dell doesn't support software. After being transferred around to I don't know how many different people and going through I don't know how many of their stupid sequences I finally snapped and put the old MOBO back in myself..reinstalled windows and the machine works fine with the exception of my cursor jumping back about 10 spaces randomly.

All I can say is Dell SUCKS ASS AND I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM THEM AGAIN. They would not acknolege the fact they sent a bad MOBO and send out another one. Transferred me from person to person for hours and totally dodged taking responsiblity for their errors.
I ran into this also with light bleed on the screen when I first bought the machine...they sent a tech out with the wrong LCD screen(I have UXGA with true life and they sent something non-glare)and I could not get them to send another. It would up being them saying they would schedule it and it never happened...finally I gave up messing with them.
I'm thinkinng of painting my laptop CAMO to hide all the Dell logo's on it and help me forget what a horrible company they are. ON SITE "WARRANTY" MY ASS.

Sorry if my English is bad on this my damn cursor keeps jumping around and it's distracting!

Man, that sucks, dude. I had a mobo like that in one of my desktops before.

Keep on them... eventually you will get it fixed.

you don't understand....they are totally dodging it by transfering me from rep to rep (six? before I snapped) and have sucked about 8 hours of my life on this deal. They don't want to honor the warranty and totally ****ed up.

I went thourgh all their stupid troubleshooting procedures I don't know how many times...they were supposed to call me back and didn't...bastards arn't standing behind their work or taking responsbility for all the trouble they have caused on this.
I was very nice about the whole thing till about hour 8.

It's pretty bad if they leave your customers hanging like that and they have to reinstall their bad parts themselves.

That sucks man. you should have made sure the mobo worked before the Tech guy left. I had a problem like that once when my hard drive failed when the tech guy was still here. He made a call to Dell himself to get a replacement and was back the next day with new parts. Hope you get it fixed.
