Are all M170 screens like this?

I ordered a m170 last week and had nothing but problems, from when the order was put in, till when I sent it back to dell. I don't want to get to much into all of it but the deal breaker was the screen. See for your self

Lights on in the room

Lights off in the room

The light leakage starts on the bottom in the 2 areas left and right of center then they both go all the way up to the top of the screen fading a bit as they reach the top. It is more noticable in person then in the pics.

Anytime anything dark is on the screen the light leakage is very noticeable. Playing doom 3 and fear it was very apperent. Outside and inside the Os it remained the same. Brightness was one down from max setting for the pictures. Even when reading these forums you can see it as your eyes read from left to right. As you go over the 2 areas you see a shift in the color.

My main use for this computer was for maya, 3ds max and gaming. So having a quality screen is very important for me.

The screen installed was the LG WC222 which from reading here I could of sworn was one of the best ones.

Ive been looking at a few other laptops like the 5720 sager, but have a bad gut fealing about the warrenties with other companys. The warrentys are important to me. If there is a problem with the laptop I need to be 100% assured that the issue will be resloved in a timley manner.

Honstley what is the quality of your screen on your m170?

I can understand minor light leakage, but light going up the entire screen on both sides?

Also one of the other issues was a chuck of plastic missing from the bottom plastics as seen here

Out of the box that is unaccetable and I can not believe that quality control would not catch something like that.

I don't see anything wrong with the notebook. Have you tried just using it and seeing if it bothers you? So an all black screen shows some uneven lighting. What can you do with an all black screen anyway? Watch a movie, do some browsing and emailing. I bet you won't notice a thing. This over zealous scrutiny of Dell notebook screens has become a fad.

Mine has some leakage. Not enough to be a problem though. To me yours looks bad in the picture and I'm sure it looks even worse in real life. I would ask Dell to send you a new one. Just the out of the box chip would be reason enough for me. Mine was perfect when I got it and I'm going to keep it perfect for as long as possible. Having something damaged out of the box just sucks... and it's very unlike Dell. The M170 is an incredible piece, you want to get started on the right foot!

No harm in asking / demanding, and you will probably get your problem fixed without too much trouble.

Tech orginaly offered an exchange for the system but customer care would have to set that up and customer care was closed by the time I got transfered to them from tech. When i called in after noticing the plastics piece missing. I was going to give the laptop some time to see if the leakage went away but seeing the plastics missing i was not going to wait it out as it would have to be returned anyways.

The next day when I called in they just offered a return which I said ok to. But they wanted me to pay for shipping back to them. The person I spoke with was very rude and to the point. She did not even give me time to explain my self. I shiped out the laptop then called cust care again to get a refund for the shipping cost which they agreed to with out any hassel. The guy said they could have sent ups to come pick it up in the first place. So I dont know what was up with the first lady I talked to.

The system I got is now 350 less then what I payed for it a week ago. If the price drops lower by the time I get the account credited I might consider giving dell a 2nd chance.
