this is a very new and attractive feature. is it really as good as it sounds? what are some pros/cons of it?

Cons? Just something else to go wrong.

Pros? Added layer of security and not having to remember your password.

thing is this, potetially its amazing high strength password\key and it can simplify the use\management of passwords.

the problem is that you still have a 7 char password as admin password that can allow usage of the computer and can be brute force broken if you have the know how. the good news is that no one know how to do that other than a guy on ebay who is in touch with ibm and checks for ownership.

so good for password managment and ease of use not so good for key strength.

It is a cool feature and works really well... But I never use it because I do not really worry about security....

I love the finger print reader on my T42p. Works great. Handles my power on, HDD & windows password. I can set it up for website passwords, but I haven't bothered yet. As bad as I type, it's much faster than typing my passwords in...once or twice.

Like the above - works great..

I think of it as simply a convenience because if anyone really wants to get into your system getting a copy of your fingeprint probably isn't that tough to them.

My passwords tend to be a little complex and long due to a mild case of

Paranoia

which makes it real easy to quickly log in.. etc.

Will the password scanner work with Firefox?

Most all the scanners made for desktops don't work with Firefox
only Internet Explorer.

can you use this to protect individual folders?

I don't think so.

However, I suggest you take a look here:

I started using this about three weeks ago and I find it extremely versatile and strong. It also locks hdd's and other storage mediums.

Yep, from this review of the X60.

In addition, the reader can manage stored passwords for you. The PKCS 11 is even compatible with the Mozilla/Firefox/Thunderbird password manager. All you have to do is go into your advanced preferences, and set up your security devices to add the module, which is located at C:\Program Files\IBM ThinkVantage\Client Security Solution\csspkcs11.dll.
