Casual games and x700 vs x1400 vs x1600??

OK, I recently screwed up and bought An Aspire 5000, thinking it would fulfill my laptop needs, which included casual gaming. Well, as we discussed on another thread, BOY was I wrong about the casual gaming. I am not trying to play HL2 or FEAR on a laptop, but this thing wouldn't even play a RTS game worth a damn. Anyway, I was able to sell it to and recoup most of my loss.

So, now I'm in the market for a new laptop, that will do normal laptop stuff (internet, watch DVDs) as well as play casual games (like Stat Wars:Empire at War, The Sims 2, etc)

Right now, I like:

Acer TravelMate TM4404WLMi AMD Turion 64 1.8GHz15.4" 1GB 120GB HD Integrated DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive ATI Mobility RADEON X700 64MB-
$1149

Acer Aspire AS5672WLMi-120GB-XP Pro Intel Core Duo 1.66GHz 15.4" Wide XGA 2GB 120GB DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility RADEON X1400 128mb - $1579

Acer TravelMate 8100 TM8104AWLMi Intel Pentium M 760(2.0GHz) 15.4" Wide SXGA+ 1GB 100GB DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility RADEON X700 128MB- $1591

So you see, my price range is from 1150 to 1591. I always thought newer was better when it came to video cards, but Im find out that an X1400 with 128MB ram is slower than an x700 with 64mb?? Is the Pentium M 760 a much better chip than the AMD Turion or the Intel Core Duo?

Thanks for all the help guys, great forums and a bunch of smart people here.

My Aspire 5672 Plays HL2 FEAR and GTA SAN ANDREAS just fine in fact very impressive considering it havent tweaked anything yet
newer drivers will no doubt improve the x1400 performance.

depends on screen resolution to the 5672 gets 1280x800 native res.

I have an MSI-1036 with an X700 256mb and it plays games fine for me (AOE, EE, Civ, etc.... (yeah... the new versions) as a decent resolution 1024X768 or even 1280 X 1024 with setting set medium to high. I use my laptop for mainly programming though. Don't expect anything like Doom III to fly on it unless you turn the settings down a good bit.

The x700 plays doom hl2 and the rest fine too, its just the last generation, since they only last about 6 months these days before a new card is out LOL

In order of gaming performance, it's the X1600, X700, and then the X1400. Note, though, that the X1000 series also provides serious performance gains in video editing (specifically, encoding and transcoding). So, while my 8204 is perfect for me with the X1600, if I had to choose between systems with the X700 or X1400, I'd go with the X1400 for the video editing gains.

Of course, systems will be released soon with the Mobility X1800, which should be a killer. I'm guessing, though, that those will be larger desktop replacement systems to compete with the nVidia 7800 Go line, which is current tops in game playing.

well thinking about it is the the comparison for equal performance should be as follows

x300 replaced by x1300
x600 replaced by x1400
x700 replaced by x1600
x800 replaced by x1800

Ok, I think I understand now better the x700 vs the x1400 argument. Well how about this?

The last two systems are basically the same price (Core Duo is $20 cheaper). Yet:

Core Duo / x1400 system: 2 GIG ram and a 120 GIG HD
Pentium M / x700 system: 1 GIG ram and a 100 GIG HD.

Would this be enough to settle it?

How close are these two chips in performance? The Core Duo runs at 1.66 and the Pentium M runs at 2.0.

I'm new to laptop CPUs dont understand the differences in chip types.
I would go with the Core Duo or sure with the specs you provided and if its only a $20 difference.
Core Duo, hands down. The x700 may edge out the x1400 slightly in performance but the rest of the Duo system will smash the Pentium M in usability and overall performance. If you multitask even a little bit you will love the Core Duo.
yes and remember future applications and games will make use of dual core processors making the whole system a very competitive choice.

I bought the 5672 on price/performance
Actually the Pentium M 2.0 will be faster than the Core Duo 99% of the time.

In my opinion you should go with 4404, the only thing I dont like about it its that it comes with a 4200RPM hd, but its $400 cheaper, so you can easily upgrade it..

if you want more performance, go to www.abs.com and configure a G3 Evolution, its a MSI-1029 with an excelent price.

Wow, Never heard of ABS before. Some decent stuff at decent prices.

For $1604, just $20 more than the Acer M760 model, you can get a:

Pentium M 760 @2.0
GeForce Go 6600 MXM Type II 256MB (much better than an X700 128MB, I think -- someone correct me if I'm wrong)
Kingston 1GB DDR2 PC2-4200 SO-DIMM
Hitachi 80GB 5400RPM SATA

For $1430 you can get:

AMD Turion 64 Mobile MT37 2.0GHz 800MHz FSB 1MB L2 (not sure how it compares to Duo Core or M 760)
X700 w/ 128 MB
Kingston 1GB DDR333
Hitachi 80GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache (not sure how 7200 RPM IDE drive compares to 5400 RPM SATA drives)

This throws a curve ball into things! Any thoughts on these?

seems like great specs, if the prices are right go for it

The 6600 is actualy slightly inferior to the X700 they are the same generation and directly comperable mid range parts, but on the mobile end the X700 uses less power and is slightly faster.

The MXM could be a nice thing though if it ever gains traction in the market you may be able to upgrade the graphics later.
also Skypine notice that the 6600 has more ram than the x700 which would give it the edge.

they are so similar that you would only really notice a difference on benchmarks anyway.

http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/
this site contains details on mxm, apparenlty they have an mxm x700 for sale!

I ended up going with the Acer TravelMate 8100 Pentium M 760(2.0GHz) , 1GB RAM, 100GB HD, and X700 128MB.

I figured in the long run, technology changes so fast with these things, that if I can get a full year useage out of it, then I'll be happy.

I really wanted the Duo Core model, but I couldn't live with starting at that very cheap looking webcam interageted into the lid.

I hope the 8100 I bought comes with a single 1 GB RAM module, so that i can easily add another gig to it, w/o having to toss the original memory module and buy two new DIMMs. Anybody know if it comes with a single 1GB module or two 512's?

Acer Aspire AS9502WSMi NoteBook Intel Pentium M 740(1.73GHz) 17.0" Wide XGA+ 512MB DDR2 533 100GB DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility RADEON X700 128MB- Retail at newegg $1,259.00

It's only been on their website for a couple days.

Thats a pretty good price for that. I bought mine from newegg too:

Acer TravelMate 8100 TM8104AWLMi Intel Pentium M 760(2.0GHz) 15.4" Wide SXGA+ 1GB 100GB DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility RADEON X700 for $1589

I can't handle the big screen/size/weight of that 17" model you pointed out. But if you can, thats a pretty good buy.
