E1705 Amazing sound quality? Or not? (tried with my expensive headphones)

Ok, so i didnt buy the e1705 thinking it would have amazing sound quality.. Didnt think it could have been better than my desktop with a modified audigy..

So anyways, the first week or so, i had my el cheapo creative 4.1 speakers plugged in.. didnt really think much of the audio..

So last night i decide to plug in my 200 dollar headphones...

WTF!!! At first i was like "too little bass" coz im used to turning up my bass....

But then i realized, the sound is pretty trademark of a REALLY good sound source..

So good to a point, that all my mp3s start to sound like crap and i can here all the imperfections in the recordings/encodings...

The last time i noticed this was in my hi fi setup (expensive speaker set up + tube amp + expensive CD player).. when i could hear ALL the imperfections in a recording...

Any other headphone junkies tried out the E1705 with good quality headphones yet??

This e1705 is continuing to amaze me more and more every day!!

OK, just tried mine out. I normally have my Sounblaster 24-bit USB driving some 7.1's and it sounds good. So I disconnected all that and plugged my Koss Porta-pro's in. It did sound a lot better, however it seems distinctly digital, and dependent on a good source. But I think there are too many variables to determine why that is. It could be I only use my Porta-pro's connected to my MP3 player, and am used to the compression. It could be the A/D conversions that "soften" the sound. It could be the sound and bass is/isn't artificially enhanced.

And it's probably all down to individual tastes. Not to mention that listening to headphones and listening in an open room will always give different experiences.

I've been nothing but impressed with the sound quality from the standard sound card on my 9400. With and without headphones, the quality is quite good IMO.

I know one thing-this thing is damn loud. I plugged my headphones in and almost popped an eardrum listening to the preloaded music. Now the volume control is all the way down. All the way.

hmm, cant wait to go home and get my grado's after reading this

I am using a klipsch 2.1 setup here at school that I like, but I wonder how much better it could be once express cards start coming onto the market.

On the topic of high quality audio:

Does anyone else have the svideo/composite/spdif or component/spdif adapter for the 9400/e1705? Anyone hook up the spdif to see (hear) the difference in quality?

I'm curious because I don't have any equipment that accepts a caxial digital input, so I can't test it myself.

FYI, it's the adapter on pg 60/61 in the user guide: http://support.dell.com/support/edoc.../PD5980MRs.pdf

I use the spdif on my home theatre system with the 5.1 surround. Its AMAZING for games like COD, FEAR and Source games.

As for music, mp3s sound as good as mp3s can sound. I play CDs through my cd player so i havent tried it thorugh the laptop.

If u play games and want surround sound, I think spdif is the only way....
