2 problems with D600: TrueMobile 300 bad firmware ; invalid service tag

Hello
I've purchased Truemobile 300 card for ma D600 laptop, I installed it myself (second-hand notebook, no warranty at all) and it's detected by BIOS - as for hardware view, installation seems ok.
Problem comes with trying to install it in Windows (XP prof SP2) - I tried drivers from www.dell.com versions A01, A02, A05 and I'm always getting messages, that card is not present or disabled - blue LED is never lit even if I press FN+F2. When I try to install it manually, I get "An error occured during the installation of the device. A service installation section in this INF is invalid." message.
I found the same case on Dell forum - here.
So it seems that my card has bad firmware and there's no possibility to fix it except for replacing for new one. And that would very complicated in my case, so I'm looking for other way.

Second complementary problem is, that when I tried (though no warranty) to contact support, my service tag (taken from BIOS) is reported as invalid - what does that mean?

Thanks in advance for any help.

bad...

Hi! Hmm...There is a new firmware for BT - but as long as it not recognized in windoofs, You won't have any chance to flash it...
The second prob. - with a tool (actually for DELL service technicians only) SVCTAG.EXE + ASSET.COM every one can change the service tag and/or owner tag etc. No way to find out the right ST of Your lappy...

if possible...

1) You'll need an on-line account with Dell. If you don't have a Dell account number you can create one here.

2) Ask the original owner if they created an on-line account when they bought the notebook. If they did, then have them log onto it. It should display the Service Tag of the system. Have them give you the Service Tag. Use the tools listed above to reset the Service Tag.

3) Then ask them to initiate an ownership transfer to you. Instructions here (they will need your Dell account number).

After the ownership transfer is completed, you'll be all set.

It is recognized by windows as a USB Device, but when I try to install driver, I get "invalid service section in INF" message (just when drivers are trying to upgrade firmware or saying so). So is there any way to hard-flash the firmware?

edit: When I press FN+F2 this "USB Device" appears/disappears in System manager.

Though it's rather impossible to contact original owner (I expect it to be some company, which "liquidated" this notebook years ago), I will try. But thanks for this info anyway, at least I'm getting idea of how these things work.

Not so new discovery

I just tried another TM300 in my notebook (REV A01, mine is REV A00 - the only difference a think) and it worked perfectly. When doing this I realized one thing - working card was detected and installed as "Dell Truemobile bluetooth module", while mine is detected as "Dell truemobile bluetooth module in Firmware Upgrade" so this ensures me in my theory, it is stuck becuase of firmware upgrade (maybe even loading first firmware when made) interrupted in critical phase.
This will rather than me help others with the same problem to recognize it (and to be sure, that there is no way out )

edit: When i changed back my card (with driver and widcomm A05 installed) it was still "BT module in FW upgrade" but now it was somehow installed succesfully (!). Of course, no LED, no detection, no bt function, but system manager shows normal-functioning "Dell truemobile ... in firmware upgrade" with no problem detected. After this I tried to install driver A02 (I saw somewhere that there is a firmware upgrade part of it), but I fell to same situation as on the beginning, so I expect it to be mistake of windows.

If you mean svctag.exe and asset.com I downloaded them already. And with bt-problem solved, I don't need support anymore (I haven't seeked original service tag anyway), but thanks.

Then I used flasher included with BT-software which can be installed without card itself from driver version A02 (btdfuapp.exe) and firmware file from complete version A05 (R77162 ...Dell.dfu). Flashing took some 10-15 minutes, but then ... blue led is lit and everything is beatiful.
Could you possibly do a step to step guide? I'm having the same problem with my truemobile 300.
Thanks.

how to do it:

first download drivers for truemobile versions A02 (R65891) and A05 with firmware included (R77162).

1. Installation of driver for Truemobile in firmware upgrade (in DFU mode)
Run A05 driver, it will extract files to c:\dell\77162\... and then tries to run setup itself, but terminates with "Device not found" message after "press FN+F2 to turn it on" message. Go to c:\dell\77162\... directory and copy both .sys files to windows\system32 directory (by this you will avoid later "invalid service section in INF" message during installation of the driver).
Go to system manager, find "USB device" which represents truemobile card (or it may be "Dell truemobile bt module in firmware upgrade" with error report), doubleclick it and press reinstall driver. Pick "choose location of the driver" (I'm not sure, I don't know how is this exactly in english windows - I'm translating from czech), then set path to c:\dell\77162\... and driver should be installed properly. After this there should be "Dell truemobile bluetooth module in firmware upgrade" in system manager working properly.
Don't delete extracted installation A05 yet.

2. Getting firmware upgrade utility
Run A02 driver and go through all the installation. The difference from A05 is, that A02 doesn't check whether the card is present so it installs the bt software to program files (which we will need).
BTW, this is even more stupid from dell than previous nonsense with mixed steps of driver installation (first services, second files instead of vice versa). In order to flash firmware you must have card with firmware loaded to be allowed to install software needed for flash of firmware (!!!). That technician must have been very angry with his boss or just a sadist.
Now the sowanted firmware flasher is here ... c:\program files\dell\bluetooth software\bin\btdfuapp.exe

3. Flashing firmware
Run the application metioned above and as a firmware file choose c:\dell\77162\...\svcpack\dell.dfu (this is why to download special A05 package instead of normal R82522 or newer, where dell.dfu isn't) and start flashing.
It is ussual that it takes some 10-20 minutes to go, so be patient.
After completing this, windows shall find a new USB Device and install it as "Dell truemobile bluetooth module" and blue LED shall be lit. Then you can uninstall dell bluetooth software from control panel (!) and install version A05 which now sees the card.

It took month to get through, so I hope it will work.

Thanks Maximal42.
I'm going to try it this weekend!

I have dell e1505/6400. I had to recover my XP installation and now I am having this problem again.

I got the BT stack from dellsupport site and it flashes firmware and gets near end of installation, then it says press f2, but it won't finish. I added the usb device as a DELL U2 - CSR driver so it looks fine in device manager, however, nothing about BT is mentioned in there and when i run any BT utility from bluetooth programs it tries to do

"setup - dell bluetooth stack"
And goes through the process again, saying press f2...

What to do to just get this WORKING again?

These references to a02, etc don't seem relevant now because dell has apparently removed certain files, etc.

Zillions thanks! I have spent quite a long time trying to solve this problem, and finally got the correct solution for your advice!

Just one thing I want to mention, that is, the two .sys files seems should be copied to \Windows\System32\Drivers\ rather than system32 directory, based on my own experience.

Many thanks again for your valuable advice!

just wanted to also say many thanks for curiing one big headache. still works but had a slight bug. had to read it a

couple of times and do it a couple of times. had it down perfect then it failed to install. had a minor bug cann't

remmeber what the failure note said. but finally got it to install correctly by reinstalling the two system files

from 77162.exe special A05 DFU file.  so I ended but coping them to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers ., twice.  first

time like maximal42 said with xiangjw corrected input then after extraction and runing of R77162.exe special A05 DFU

file. got the failure note. but pressing FN + F2 would turn off wifi so had to press twice maybe needed to deactive

wifi to begin with I don't know. but anyways it was going perfect got it into Dell trumobile bluetooth module in

firmware upgrade everything looked good. then ran R65891.exe A02 everything was going great finished perfectly no

hitches. then went to C:\Program Files\Dell\bluetooth software\bin\btdfuapp.exe. and pointed it to

C:\dell\drivers\77162\301804\svcpack\Dell.dfu. and ran it came back with an error no install talk about heartbreak.

after several tries iran the DFU last but before that I reinstalled the two .SYS system files from 77162.exe special

A05 DFU file which are btwusb.sys and frmupgr.sys. just before doing the DFU from

C:\dell\drivers\77162\301804\svcpack\Dell.dfu.. and it installed perfectly no hitches coughes nothing just a perfect

install. althugh it takes some time like you guys said so everyone doing it must be very patient. after install

though noticed I had two bluetooth incons in the task bar potion on the bottom of XP SP2. one working perfectly blue

with white in middle, the other blue with red in the middle. the same after a reboot. but it ets cleared up if you

install normal R82522.exe A05 stack only. you end up with only one bluetooth icon in the task bar portion. that

works perfectly. so thank you both for the extreme  help as I was also woorking with a TM300 A00 module on a D800 I

was building.

what ever if you click on the ones I've said are for downloading you ge thoughs files. and R77162. is really hard to find. only found it one place. after days of searching. the other are still up at dell but not R77162.exe  its so far only available at that FTP dell japan. so far haven't found it on the USA site. going to check others too. and if you ever have to install a TM300 early version  in a early dell you'll find out hoe important thoughs links are. and how important it is to follow this install procedure.
