How to underclock the 8790? - Page 2

Lowering the FSB from 200 to 133, resulted in a drop of 3 degrees of the CPU temperature reading.

Art,

I am not really sure. The information of sensor type was probably doing the trick. Right now I am useing the ClockGen 'CG-ICS952618'. A lower speed is confirmed in the MobileMeter readings.

Roger, can you try using SuperPI to confirm that your processor is actually running slower with Clockgen?

I have now runned the SuperPI test with different settings of ClockGen.
Default setings 3000/200/200/44/22, gave me 39 seconds. Underclocking to 2000/133/133/44/22 gave me 53 seconds. It seems to work!

Ignore my post above - Clockgen works fine! Not sure why it didn't work before or if it was "just me" . Doesn't seem to do a great deal for the running temp though so not sure that it's all that useful.

Also managed to boost the performance by overclocking (!)... not sure how much I dare crank up the clock - any ideas what a safe limit is? I tried 3.4 GHz and that worked (boosting SuperPI time to 41s).

BE AWARE:

If you use this utility and have the "Clock Down" enables within the BIOS (for battery poser) you may (actually will) experience a system "Hang" when going on battery.

JUST AN OBSERVATION - and a painful one for me.

Why does battery power result in bigger drop than when underclocking?



See this pic of the CPU temperature when I underclock.

The FIRST drop in frequency is due to pulling the power cable out and running on battery at 2.56 GHz. Results in a drop of at least 6 degrees C.

Putting the power cable back in results in a return to 48 degrees.

The SECOND drop in frequency (also to 2.56 GHz) is due to Clockgen. Results in drop of 1 degree.

Putting frequency back to 3.2 GHz using Clockgen sees the temp go back up 1 degree to 48.

Any ideas why this might be? What else happens to cool the CPU when you remove the power cable - does it undervolt as well?

I have noticed that mobilemeter and clockgen do not work together all that well in some instances, so you might want to save the graph from running on ac, boot up in battery mode, then run mobilemeter and compare the findings.

Let us know what you find.

I don't really understand what you're getting at - maybe that MobMeter is stopping Clockgen from fully underclocking and this is what is causing the temperature drop to be less?

I've confirmed that the clock rate is falling by the correct rate using SuperPI, while MobMeter is running, so I don't think this is the issue. There must be something else that makes the CPU run cooler when you go on battery power - the question is, what?

Have also just tried NHC and RightMark, which are CPU control / undervolting programs. Undervolting options aren't available - dimmed out. The underclocking doesn't seem to do much either. There's a "throttling" option on RightMark which doesn't seem to do much except make the computer run slower.

But I've found a solution! ... sadly it involves shelling out £950 for a Core Duo...

lowering the clock wouldnt reduce temps that much, it is the same vcore

maybe it undervolts on battery too

That's what I reckon. There doesn't seem to be a way to undervolt from Windows though (or maybe there is? I'll start another thread on this...).

Just got my new Core Duo (Dell 6400 / E1505). It's pretty silent (except now there's no fans running I can hear the hard disk!! I can probably live with it.). But the screen is CR*P compared to this one! Makes me appreciate the screen I've got!

How come that your time is 41s with a 3.4 GHz clock frequency? Mine is 39s with a Prescott 3 GHz/800MHz CPU and a 512MB DDR400 RAM. My desktop with a Northwood 3.06 GHz/533Mhz CPU and 2x512MB DDR333 RAM does it in 33s.

Prescott 3.0 does not mean that it is quicker than a Northwood 3.4.
