Ferrari 3400 Lmi -- Love it but ships with bad hd

For those looking through the forums trying to decide whether to buy the Ferrari line, I thought I'd put in my two cents.

I have a Ferrari 3400 and LOVE IT! However 9 months after I bought it the hard drive crashed! It used to get VERY HOT under my left wrist--where the hard drive is located. I figured this wasn't good, but didn't expect anything to go wrong so soon.

I had a great experience with tech support. I'm pretty knowledgeable about computers, so I had tried almost everything when I called. The worst part about it is that I either had to mail the whole thing back to their Texas depot and wait a while for them to fix it or do the repair myself. I decided on the latter. They mailed me a new hard drive (different manufacturer) and I took the laptop apart & replaced it. It works GREAT and doesn't get anywhere NEAR as hot as the old one.

All this aside, I love the ferrari 3400. The only thing I would suggest is the extended warranty. You can also probably buy something comparable (& just as cool looking) now from another company for cheaper--your call.

It's very upgradeable and it's DARN fast! Unfortunately the pretty red top is prone to scratching. Does get me plenty of looks & people tellin' me how cool the thing is.

Just my two cents...

I'm actually pretty impressed that they sent the hard drive to you to install. As simple as it is in any modern notebook, Toshiba absolutely refused to do so. I had to send my M200 Tablet in for two weeks to have a hard drive replaced: one screw to remove the cover, unplug the drive, four screws to take off the bracked, then repeat. I could do it in my sleep.

So, knowing that Acer is more reasonable in this respect makes me feel even better about my recent 8204 purchase.

I am glad Acer was willing to ship you a drive for you to replace it yourself. They weren't willing to do so to replace my dead DVD burner however! For them to honor the warranty, I had to either A: remove the drive, ship it back to the US from Korea(where I am stationed currently) where my wife could then ship it to them in Texas, and they would reimburse me for the cost of her to ship it to them(but not for me to ship it to her) Or option b was : Ship them my entire laptop the same way as the dead drive.

I gave up since the cost of shipping between me and my wife would have pretty much negated any savings on having them do it over the cost of a BRAND NEW drive. I wound up spending $70.00 US to buy a Panasonic UJ-846 Dual layer drive and replacing it myself.(7 Screws total and about 2 minutes of work)..
