Yesterday I went to a party and someone could have used my laptop, I don't know, maybe thats what started all of this.

Today I turned on my laptop and it was asking me on the ms-dos boot screen to chose Safemode, safemode with network, start windows normally ...etc, so I chose start windows normally. The xp loading logo appeared for 5 seconds and then just for a second the screen changed to a blue screen very fast with strange white text and then it shut restarted the laptop, the message that appeared on the blue screen was too fast to read but I remembered a sequence "0x000000" I dont understand what this message means and why I can't use my laptop because im stuck in this loop everytime I restart and chose any options on the list. I can't lose my all of my files or the programs I have installed, formatting is not an option for what I could lose, and I think its just a windows problem.

Please help reply and help me soon, any software recommendations could help, notice I don't have a floppy drive therefore I can't use a floppy boot disk.

Solutions ASAP please .

go to control panel - system - advanced - settings for startup and recovery uncheck the box next to automatically restart.

you should then be able to tell from the bsod what the problem is. you will have to make those changes in safe mode.

Ok I disabled restart on system failure.

it says this on the blue screen

"A problem has been dtected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

If this is the first time youve seen this stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hard... (etc)

Technical info: **STOP: 0x000000ED (0X8675510, 0xC000009C, 0x00000000, 0x000000000)

This is the strange part I don't get, I have this gateway automatic recovery disk, and it has this internal OS that gateway made themselves, after it loads I see this recovery process but I see no options to repair, I think it automatically goes to reformat C:, which is pretty lame, any ideas?

that is usually not good....google it to find out more....if you are concerned about losing data...buy another hard drive and put your current drive in an external enclosure so you have the data you want. or in safe mode look to see if there is any spyware or programs that you didn't install and un-install them.
good luck

I have found an interesting link:

http://computer-vet.com/weblog/2004/...ot_volume.html

I don't know how to get to command prompt so I can type those commands, I have 3 different recovery cds "my new laptop's" my old laptops, and my computer's. But they seem not to have a repair key or something, isn't there a key combo to get to this command prompt?

recieved that same "Unmountable Boot Volume" blue screen of death on my Dell Dimension desktop a couple weeks ago, i tried everything in the book all the way up to using the Ultimate Boot Disk, in the end the only option was to format the drive. I have no idea how it happened though...

Ok, all I need to know is this, how can I get to command prompt to be able to write the following: chkdsk /r
chkdsk /p
fixboot

Apparently many people had the same problem and fixed the problem running those commands, I don't know how to get to write the commands, I am really lost

w.r., are you using a Windows XP disc or a Gateway recovery disc? Unless you use an official XP disc, you won't be able to get to the option you're loking for.

I'm using a recovery disk the machine came with.

A friend of mine burned a windows xp dvd but I never used it, well nothing happens when I put in that windows xp dvd and restart, I mean no options or nothing... I guess it only works in windows.

I want to get to a command prompt but I dont know how to get there.

I finally fixed it!!!

I feel way better now not having to reformat it, I think I depreciate these forums for not finding them useful to my problems. Someone by the name of DarqHelmet actually convinced me to pull out my recovery dvd and attempt to reformat, but the split second accident of pressing a wrong key made me think about going to the problem deeper.
I solved it by finding this really remote CIA program "dont ask me how I luckily found it" but it did solve every problem by booting it.
