Laptop for my mum in the UK

I live in Pennsylvania, USA. I have been looking for a laptop so that my mum can access the web & join in the e-mails/photo sharing/IM etc. She lives in Ilford, Essex. Four questions:

1. If I buy a laptop in the US can my mum use it in the UK without transformers etc (in the past I have found that the extended use of transformers ruins the electronic gadgets I send her from the US). I think that it may be best to buy a UK model, but any thoughts would be appreciated;

2. Which laptop to buy (I had narrowed it down to the ACER 3003 or 3613, mostly because they are reasonably priced & have a 15.4'' widescreen that she would like- a laptop because she lives in a small flat and doesn't have room for a desktop);

3. All the e-tailers in the UK that I have found won't accept a US credit card or deliver to a location other than the billing address. Of course, if the answer to 1. works out #3. becomes redundant.

4. What is the best way for her to access the web in the UK. She is a pensioner and needs to keep an eye on the pennies but at the same time it would be great if she had broadband access. Are there cost-effective solutions? I met a couple that travelled a lot & they had figured out a way of using a cheap US service but I can't remember how they did it.

Almost all laptops i've seen in the last 5 years will support 100 to 240 volts. I don't have my acer powersupply in front of me, so I can't tell you for user if Acer supports it.

1. Yep but unless you hand deliver it she will have to pay import duty if you send it by courier. Thats very expensive and can be as much as 25%.

2. I got my mum the Acer Aspire 5504 because it is 14.1" and a pretty decent spec for the price. Much lighter than a 15.4" so that is important if she wants to use it while sitting on the couch or in bed.

3. Try laptopsdirect.co.uk or shopacer.co.uk or ebuyer.co.uk

4. I usually recommend Pipexfor ADSL since I've tried 4 different companies and they were the only one with flawless service, but if cost is an issue and she is a light user then there are pleny of cheaper options with various payment plans. Metronet is a pay as you go type service which a friend of mine seemed to find ok. A wireless router would be nice too - this one would be perfect.

Broadband

THanks. Seems like Metronet would be best for her as it has a much greater allowance.... or am I not reading that right? I have never had a broadband allowance tho' so I don't really understand if the allowance is adequate. Any guidance?

I think I will get a UK notebook although my sister is going there at the end of march.
