Suse 10.0 installed, no internet

I just installed my first Linux OS on my lappy. Its pretty neat but i spent the whole day inside its netword config (YaSt) tryin' to get the internet to work. I'm on a cable connection with a linksys router.

I have had it get the IP address automatically with DHCP then i made a static IP. I entered in the DNS server names. Im just really flustered at the whole situation; i waisted a whole sunday on it. The best i got was after entering "www.google.com" after 10 minutes of waiting the google home page opened.

The card works 'cause i was on the net in windows a few times. Thanks for any help you can provide me.

in a word: its suse! kill it. plenty of BETTER distros out in the world, and of all you picked suse? why?


but...yeah, beats me. make sure the module is loaded, everything is configured right, your cable is Plugged in, and so on

Can you give a little more detail on what you see and have tried? Things that would help might be: ifconfig -a, netstat -rn & lsmod; contents of /etc/resolv.conf. More detail is better than none.

When you tried dhcp did you get an ip?

How was it configured when you did get a response?

Did you try pinging google at that time?

Which browser? Did you mess with its configuration?

when checking for a signal, do "ping -c 3 http://www.google.com" in console rather than the browser

i just got rid of Suse and put in PcLinuxOs.... its puuuuuurdy! I got the internet without even trying. thanks anyhow.

EDIT: oh yeah i also installed Ubuntu but it wouldnt get past the boot menu... it kept getting stuck on "synchronizing clock from blahblahblah.org". So i assumed it wasnt reaching the web either. Even when i [ctrl]+[c] it still wouldnt get through.

Thats one thing that pisses me off. Sometimes i dont want internet, yet ubuntu stalls forever loading network/sync clock/ and if you dont prees ctrl c in time, you are SOL. Also loading hotplug... Other than that ubuntu rocks!!!! Pclos is really nice too.

There's nothing bad about SUSE... but failed to mention what card. Also, SUSE comes by default with Multicast DNS enabled (Apple), you may want to turn that off by editing your /etc/host.conf file and adding "mdns off" to it. I have hosts with it still on and they work though.

Ubuntu, gentoo, etc... I would imagine they'll have the same problem as SUSE. But hey... people like to blame things when they don't understand.

There is nothing wrong with suse per se. However, the install is kind of obnoxious, and i find it to be quite laggy and slow. With that said, i know that there are many people for which suse meets their needs. Hell look how suse does at DISTROWATCH. We all just have different personal needs and tastes and by nature we reccomend that which works best for us. It seems a general trend that ubuntu , PcLos, et al., work right out of the box with very few configurations needed. That's why they are reccomended, because they are very powerful distros if used to their fullest extent, that require very little configs. I know linux is meant to be used to config your machine to death, but under that premise we would all be running LFS, however that's not practical. By nature we seek practicality, if Suse works for you hell, just use it, if it doesnt go on to the hundreds of distros out there. well, just skip red hat.

But really, ubuntu is teh best.

Difference between Suse and Gentoo...

Suse does its best to hide the text based configuration that exists, and as a result in effect makes it more difficult at times to configure and fix things by hand that YasT is unable to deal with.

Gentoo is designed around working with those text based configuration files, while being more difficult to work with if you dont know what you are doing, it is MUCH more flexible as a result of not depending on Yast. Installing things Yast doesnt expect wont break the system like it will in Suse, same with doing things in a different way.

Suse can be capable as a general distro for those that never do much with their machine, and dont mind the speed issues or the bloat. But for anything beyond a basic dependency on the graphical tools, it is a poor choice IMO.
