Help me with my first notebook purchase

So I have been doing some research lately and have decided on a note book. Problem is I have only about $2000 to spend TOPS. This is my first major computer purchase and this will be a personal computer only. I want a computer that can multitask and is lightning fast. I would appriciate any help at all with the subject, as I am still a fairly big noob.

In the real world I would LOVE to build this computer just as im about to suggest but I dont beleive that it is possible with my budget and the market. I'm looking for stores that could customize the computer or a possible chassis' that will support and might already have the requirments I am looking for. I know I'll probably have to make some sacrifices of some components to get others. If I could get some help on why they wouldnt go together that would be great.

Will be running XP Pro. Main uses will be DVD Back-ups, BTs, minimal cad use, Photoshop, small amounts of gaming (BF2, CS:S, etc) and surfing the web.

Here is what I was thinking...

Brand:
Acer
Dell
HP
IBM
Sony
Toshiba (preferably)

Processor:
64 bit 2.something GHz (Thinking about future upgradability, as I would rather have Pentium M)
I was thinking maybe Turion ? Do I need/should get a dual core?

512 MB Ram (will upgrade to 2GB myself later) so it must be Upgradable. DDR2 Ram capable

40+ GB 7200RPM harddrive (will have a 300GB external usb 2.0 7200RPM)
or 80GB+ 5400RPM and no external

8x lite-scribe Dual Layer DVD-RW

Soundcard?

Video card? I know nothing about either of these subjects. I dont game much but probably more often with a new system. The Games will be high preformance games.
(would like to have Directx 9 complient and pixel shador 2.0 capable. Dedicated) can it be upgradable?

Expresscard 54 Slot

lots of usb...no use for 5 in 1 drives or anyting

Bluetooth

DDR2 Ram capable

15"+ screen

I live on the island and be will in Vancouver tonight and tomorrow and dont get over often. I have the cash. Or maybe i should eBay a PC? Should I stop at some stores? Is there any machines out there now that fit this profile? How much work would this be to do? would it have any compatabiliy problems? where could i get such a machine?

Thanks for all your help. Any input is appriciated.

If you want the Turion 64, you cant have DDR2 RAM.

If you want this notebook to

you don't need top of the line expensive stuff..

If you want to 'build' a notebook, take a look at sites like:

I have decided not to build an entire note book but rather upgrade just a few things.

I have officially narrowed it down to 3 computers

Acer Travelmate 8204
2GHz/2GB/X1600 256MB
120GB 5400RPM
15.4" TFT active matrix WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050)

Total = 2,673.93 Canadian

Dell Inspiration 9400
Intel® Core™ Solo Processor T1300 (1.66GHz/667MHz FSB) (would purchase Intel Core Duo T2500 Yonah 667MHz FSB at the same time and upgrade)
17 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen UXGA Display with TrueLife
1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz [Included in Price]
120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive!
256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory
8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g Mini Card (54Mbps)

Total = 1800 Canadian plus 417 US for T2500
2283 CAD

Dell Inspiration 6400
Intel® Core™ Duo processor T2500 (2MB Cache/2GHz/667MHz FSB)
15.4 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen SXGA+ Display with TrueLife™
1GB DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHZ, 1 DIMM
Free Upgrade to 100GB 5400rpm SATA Hard Drive!
8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g Mini Card (54Mbps)
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 (will buy machine when dedicated graphics card is available or return when it comes out for one with upgradable dedicaded memory)

what do do you guys think?

I would also consider the Acer Aspire AS5672WLMi. It comes with a Core Duo (T2300), Mobility X1400, 1gb ram, 100gb HD, DVD-+RW, built in cam, 15.4" CystralBrite and XP Pro. Here it is in Canada for $1,612 canadian:

With GST and shipping you are up to $1,858 canadian.

From the 3 above, I'd go for the acer.

However I do think that the acer 5672 might be better suited for your needs, and 1k cheaper..

i thought they didn't have the 7800 go in the e1705
