msconfig issues

I went into msconfig and disabled a lot of the non-microsoft start-up services. Ever since I've had the 'you changed your settings' box come up on restart. I ticked the box saying 'don't display this message'- but it made no difference. Returned to normal settings- and the box is STILL appearing on startup, regardless of me ticking the 'don't show..' tab. How do I get rid of it?

When you change stuff in msconfig, it adds a registry key to make this box come up. Open up your registry, go to:

HKEY_LOCAK_MACHINE>Software>microsoft>windows>current version>run.

In the run folder, look for a key called msconfig (i think its called) Whatever its called, it will be evident. Just delete this and it *should* stop coming up.

I tried that- the msconfig entry is not there! Any other ideas? If not I'll have to do a clean install- which i shouldprobably do anyway before handing this laptop over to my parents.

i dunno how to fix that, but on a side note. you should always disable services from start/run/services.msc

I think you should reformat if your giving it away.

Hi,
What you need is startup monitor, which is a tiny utility made by a MIT student named Mike Lin. If you install it, it will always ask you to confirm whenever some program or application adds itself to one of your startup registry keys. It is very useful, and helps you beat off annoying startupers like Quicktime, MSN Messenger and Realplayer, in addition to the MSConfig screen.
