Graphics card..why do I care?? - Page 2

The intergrated video card uses shared memory so its using some of your ram.
I'm pretty sure the 2d performance of that card is slower then then the x1400 or the 7800.

Other then realy really wanting to save money....I see no reason to go for the integrated card.

how about greatly enhanced battery life?

in e1705 you can get ATI card but it's also sharing the memory... so it's even worse - when you upgrade your card you also have to get more memory - with standart 512mb (minus 256mb for card) the windows won't run at all.

The ATI has 256 megs of dedicated memory and can share an extra 256 megs. But I figure you can set it to only use its 256 megs of dedicated memory.

The card has (128MB of dedicated with 128MB of shared system memory).

Just because you can get a windows computer with 512 mb of ram doesn't make it a good idea.

BTW, the amount of system ram used by a shared memory video card is dependent upon the amount of system ram

From Ati's web site. I dont know how much stock you can put in it...but here's what they say.

Longer-Lasting Battery Life
Go longer with ATI’s PowerPlay™ 6.0 technology, maximizing battery life for an extended on-the-move visual experience. Deliver a video-rich multimedia presentation, play the hottest game at the highest settings, or enjoy extended battery life when watching your favorite movie. Mobility™ Radeon® X1400’s power management technology monitors user demands and machine capabilities to maximize battery life. Mobility™ Radeon® X1400 handles today’s graphics-intensive 3D games and HD content with plenty of power for the applications of tomorrow.
I'm pretty sure the integrated card might stutter when playing back HD videos.

Admittedly the x1400 is fairly power efficient, and is probably a good choice (in terms of battery usage/ability to do some 3d stuff).

The integrated vs 7800 however makes a difference in battery life of over an hour, which is what I was referring to earlier.

I'm not sure if the 1400 or integrated would be better for battery (probably integrated if word processing and x1400 for dvd watching).

Since I bought the laptop for portable video editing setup - that all I care about.

I did two test:

1) capture off my camera via FW onto the built-in hdd with Premiere Pro 2 - result: 0 frames lost.

2) capture off my camera via FW onto external HDD (200 GB Maxtor 7200rpms 8mb buffer) connected via USB - result: 0 frame lost.

Conclusion: even though it's only a laptop woth 5,400rpm HDD it does its job right. I'm happy - money I saved on faster HDD I invested in external HDD (custom built setup cost me $110 after taxes).

P.S. It's my first post so don't yell at me too much. I love the laptop as many other users here. :-)

Not so !

Each OS has it's sweet spot for hardware.
98 needed only 256 ram, and a pentium 3.
XP needed 512 ram and a entry level P4.

Vista, it looks like needs a Direct X 10 video card, 1 gig ram, and a Merom cpu.
Include your dvd player of choice too. And your set until Vista is replaced.

Back in '02. When I got my Dell 4550. I had the option of getting a 3.06 Ghz Hyperthreading Pentium 4 CPU, and a ATI 9700.
This was back in '02.
These things would have been very useful if I had them right now.
I could run Limitedsharpenfaster in ffdshow.
I would have a video overlay.

So the moral to this story is you can indeed get a pc at launch that lasts the full lifespan, if you get a good enough one.
You Can futureproof.
Had I got that Pentium 3.06 Ghz, ATI 9700. I would just need more ram and my 4550 would last me through Vista's lifespan too.

All is good so far. This computer is faster than my desktop and is doing the job perfectly even with the cheap vid card.

YES, during the XP install, at the end Dell will throw up a banner, DO NOT Touch for 30 minutes. Heed this warning. I didn't and I ended up in Media Direct Hell. I thought Dell was reinstalling the bloatware, not so.

After that all you need to to is insert the bootable repair CD, follow the directions, and you're done.
