ODM's-- Relative Merit?? - Page 2

You won't believe how easy it is to install a barebones laptop. Installing hd and memory needs little more than unscrewing a couple of plastic covers on the back, very much like installing batteries on a calculator. The CPU is not that much different. Unscrew a plate next to the keyboard and there it is. Download the ECS G556 manual from ecs.com.tw and see for yourself. I believe in the US the only barebones distributor is Syntax. When I contacted them they said that the G556 is due in mass producting late February and will be available then. Many resellers currently offer the Syntax AM5100, the predecessor to the AM5600. Do a search for that model and you will find many Syntax resellers. Any of them may carry the AM5600 once it is released.

Voodoo values performance over all else and therefore has many specs that only hardcore gamers care about. Talking with them gave me detailed information about the G556 that is not published anywehre. From them I learned about the 32bit color depth and 25ms response time of the G556.

Arrghhh! Don't think I can put it off until late Feb., because that means may well slip until early Mar. and I'd be hosed.

Did Syntax give you any hints about what suggested barebone prices might be??

You think the 24bit display will be standard, or maybe a Vodoo specific upgrade for the hard core gammer market?
