Hey guys,

Finished the first part of my review for the ABS ZFORCE F2.

http://www.cformatdesign.lunarpages....557Review.html

I also plan to add benchmarks of the laptop as well as benchies of both the 505x and my home p4 2.4 desktop for comparison. As well as an evaluation after using it for a while.

If you have any questions, Please post them here and I will update the review if there are details I left out.

Anyway, Enjoy.

NICE! Congrats . Been waiting patiently for your review Devast as you've done quite a bit of research for this class of books. Gotta give a few nannas for this .

By the way, do you know what the response time is on the lcd? How does it appear relative to the 505X next to it. The 505X just isn't sharp enough or bright enough for my tastes.
Wow, nice review! I like photos and comparisons with the 505. Any dead pixels?

I just read your review and dang it, my wireless button doesn't work either.

This annoys me to no end. I am too perfectionistic for my own good.

Ditto on the speakers being crappy. They borderline the WORST laptop speakers I have heard. Previous laptops include Toshiba Portege, Hitachi VisionBook, Compaq Presario 2810T and frankly the F2 is almost as bad at the Portege, which is an ultra portable.

Other than that, the F2 is a great machine!

Just wondering, what happens when you press the wireless button guys? On mine, a window pops up saying wireless enabled (with a checkbox) and the little wireless light does come on. I'll be visiting my brother (who has a wireless lan) in a few weeks and I'm wondering if the wireless is going to work for me. ugh.
about the speakers... when I said they were the size of dimes, I wasn't kidding. I had to turn up my windows volume to adequately hear em.
I wish the speakers were the size of dimes. They sound more like the size of pesos to me...

Anyways when I press the wireless button nothing happens. Absolutely nothing.

I don't like having a button that doesn't do anything on my system.

X, lol I hear ya. I'm at work and I dont have access to my laptop, but doesnt the Launch Manager allow you to configure it to something else if you want? (if you press one of the last 2 buttons the launch manager should come up).
Out of the 5 buttons, only 4 are configurable.

The wireless button is fixated on 1 function only. And that function doesn't even bloody work.
I'm pretty sure you can change it but you'd have to go into your registry and manually set it up. I'd try it on mine but I'll wait and see if my wireless works before I screw with it. It looks pretty straightforward in the registry settings. If you'd like I can give a bit more detail on how to set it up later tonight.
Thorough write-up. Maybe one of these days soon I'll get one out for my Mayhem G1. Glad you like your system.

BTW, this may seem like a stupid question but does yours have a normal mouse plug or do you use usb?

To understand what the AOpen 1557 is and isn't, I think it may help to know what market it was designed for. AOpen laptops have not been designed for the U.S. market. They have been designed for and are largely sold in the Chinese clone market. In that market, basic functionality at a low price are the design goals. Will these laptops suit some people in the U.S. market as well? Absolutely. Just understand what you are getting (and not getting).
So supposedly there will be an update that will enable the wireless button to work, is that correct?
Cancel what I said about changing the regestry to program that first button. I looked at the launch manager registry settings and it's not as straightforward as I thought.

To answer some questions:

The screen is very bright, but I think the 505x was as well. I'm not sure what the response time is, but from the programs I've tried, I haven't noticed any ghosting, none is apparent when running Need for Speed Underground.

no dead pixels! I was worried about that the most because, I just have that type of luck.

They didn't seem too bad to me, but I suppose the laptops that I'm used to using are more of the business type ones like latitudes and armadas, in which case, I'm just happy that its stereo. While the sound on my roommate's 505x is probably the best sound I've ever heard from a notebook, If I travel, I always use cans (headphones) , and at home there's a 1/8" plug that feeds right to my stereo system, so I rather have whatever gains in weight and size I get from not carrying around bigger speakers and a subwoofer.

Absolutely nothing at all since our 802.11g cards aren't supported by the drivers of the launch pad. Lights don't function either.

no ps2 ports, you'll have to use a usb mouse

So the AOpen 1557 was NOT designed FOR Americans but other laptops ARE? No wonder the Inspiron 8600 is wide enough to fit both your hands, a Double cheeseburger on one side, and a super-sized diet coke on the other.

Well according to the tech at ABS, if it was going to work, it would be from a driver update from AOpen, but to me that doesn't necessarily mean it will ever materialize. Just a personal theory but: also since the gateway 505x seems very similiar, it may explain why the high end 505xl only comes with 802.11b. It may also be a possibility to use the gateway driver when the 505x/xl supports it because , not only are the panels very similiar, but the 505x and 505xl is distributed by Wistron which is division of Aopen.

Anyway..... The laptop absolutely rocks so far... I would get rid of the whole cd playing thing along the top and make my wireless button work just for the peace of mind that everything works, and then it would absolutely perfect. OOps... almost forget to mention... making a label that says "notebook" and putting it on the screen in place of a manufacturer's label is really retarded. They should at least have used chinese characters or something.
Ditto, the Notebook with an italicized E doesn't make the label any cooler than it's supposed to be.

I uninstalled the AV Manager software because whenever I close my lid with the laptop on the button kept on getting pressed and opens like 8x WinDVD windows. It was getting annoying and I NEVER use the AV Panel anyways.

BTW Devast, does yours report batter power in time or %?

Devast, if its OK with you I'd like to add your review to my links section.

Close but not quite right. As I understand it, Wistron and AOpen are sister companies in the Acer Group of affiliated companies. Wistron is a designer and manufacturer of laptops for other computer companies. They never sell under their own name. Wistron makes the M505 laptops for Gateway and the 1557 laptops for AOpen. AOpen sells laptops in China and also sells them to resellers around the world.

Alright... I was under the impression Aopen was the umbrella company from this statement by www.motherboards.org, "AOpen has 1900 employees worldwide and has many companies under its Global IT corporate name including Acer, DMS, AOpen, Wistron, Nexus and New Wave products"

http://www.motherboards.org/articles...ws/1264_1.html

but I guess I read it wrong. owell... mostly was making the point that the machines were related, so people may be able to find other sources for drivers, I'm personally not really interested in the politics of the laptop industry.

Also while looking for drivers, it appears wistron makes x-boxes too.

Definately cool by me... I also happen to have a php nuke site with fully working bulletin board system that is currently unused, which I wouldn't mind converting to a "1557 specific", or maybe a ABS/Cyberpower/all those odd company laptop specific site if there is such a demand. Let me know guys, there doesn't seem to be enough resources for us Tier 1 manufacturer rebels!

This sentence was definitely written to make AOpen seem as important as possible. What it leaves out is that the "Global IT corporate name" is "the ACER Group". The ACER Group is far bigger than 1900 employees.
