Aspire 5650 vs. TravelMate 8200 (Graphics Wise)

So,

Putting all other aspects of the notebook aside (Screen problems with the 8200, blah blah blah), which Notebook GPU is better? The ATI Radeon Mobility X1600 or the nVidia GeForce Go 7600? I've been searching for comparisons but can't seem to find the right comparison.

X1600 > 6800 > 7600

Therefore, X1600 > 7600
post #3 of 23
ah its the classic ATI vs Nvidia battle
according to what I have read in reviews the 7600 should perform something like an ati x1500 would, the 1600 has the edge because it still has the hypermemory thing going for it, whereas the 7600 just has native ram.

will be interesting to see some real life benchmarks though

Acer 5652 - Geforce 7600 : Default (450/350)

3DMark03 = 8100 - (1024x768)
3DMark05 = 3534 - (1024x768)
3DMark06 = 2455 - (1024x768)
3DMark06 = 2194 - (1280x800)
Aquamark 3 = 59598 - (1024x768)

ASUS A6Ja - X1600: Default (455/355)

3DMark05 = 3968
3DMark06 = 2236

The 3Dmark06 score better from the Asus than a Acer 8204? (8204 - higher default clocks).

Edit:
Ok ! Other resolution.

ASUS A6JA (German):

3DMark06: ~1830 (1280x800)
3DMark05: ~3500 (1024x768)

Dont know about that, 6.3 (6.2 already improved about 7%) Catalyst and S05 bios here, BIOS S05 is about 5% faster than S07 so I dont know if they really know how to take every drop of juice...

Does that mean that the 7600 is better than the X1400 ?

i am sorry if i am taking over your thread but i am looking at the 5672 and 5650 which is better for gaming ?
post #10 of 23
its quite possible the 7600 is a little better than the x1400
can anyone let me know the memory bandwith of the 7600 on the 5650 series
that will most likely be the decider, as the x1400 appears only to have a 64bit bus , but that is according to the OmegaDriver details and it doesnt recognise the card as an x1400 it seen an M54!!!

X1600 = 7600 (Performance)

7600 (Acer): 128 Bit x 700/350 Mhz = 11,2 GB/s ???
X1600 (Asus): 128 Bit x 710/355 Mhz = 11,36 GB/s ???

Moblity X1600 - Go 7600
Pixel Pipelines 12 - 8
Vertex Pipelines 5 - 5
ROPS 4 - 8
Texture Units 4 - 8
Memory bus 128 - 128

Clockspeeds vary between notebook models.

Another thing: I think that A6Ja only has 128MB dedicated DDR3 RAM (total of 256MB with Hypermemory). The 8204 has 256MB dedicated, with a total of 512MB. SO, that helps explain why the 8204 tends toward 4200 3Dmark05 vs. the A6Ja's roughly 3900.

I remember reading similar benchmarkes on the Asus in a review somewhere...

Nope, only differences are, faster GPU/MEM clockspeeds and T2500 CPU...

aha the OmegaDriver seems to be misreporting 64bit mem bandwith

Best-in-class mobile graphics performance.
Go for the industry’s best-in-class graphics performance for thin-and-light notebooks—ATI’s Mobility™ Radeon® X1400. A discrete 90-nanometer process GPU with a new ultra-threaded 3D architecture delivers visual power far beyond integrated UMA graphics, performance-enhanced with a new ring-bus memory controller and high-speed 128-bit 4-channel DDR/DDR2/GDDR3 RAM support. Accelerate through tasks and entertainment with a native x16-lane PCI Express® bus interface, pumping data through 4 pixel shader pipelines and 2 vertex processors. Mobility Radeon X1400 packs all the mobile graphics power and visual velocity you need with your notebook PC
.

So that might mean that there is still yet more driver optimisation that will give a significant performance boost.

Try this!!!

There is a german website http://www.notebookcheck.com that has a great review about this laptop. From their benchmarking the Nvidia GeForce Go 7600 performs better than the ATI Mobility Radeon X1600, and the overall performance is pretty good, by the way, from my searching the net i've found out that the Nvidia
GeForce Go 7600 really is a better card almost as good as the old GeForce Go 6800, which logically means that it's got to be better than the ATI Mobility Radeon X1600. I think NVidia has done an excellent job again beating ATI!!!
Well Done Nvidia.

Ati X1600 (8204, Acer 6.3, BIOS 3313)
3dMark'03: 7791 (472/468 MHz), 8325 (513/513 MHz)
3dMark'05: 4530, 4896
3dMark'06: 2009, 2142
With more overclocking you can hit 2500 in 3dMark'06 and 5200 in '05. 7600 get really high score in 3dMark'06 and '03, but low in '05... Why?...
Ati cards has always been better in color reproduction, but X1600 seems to have some strange problems with this (background noise with dark colors). It looks like it's software related...

(X1600): Compared to go6800 / 2.0 GHz Amilo 4438: loses on 03, wins 05 and 06.
(9070/oc10001; 3835/4257; 1852/2032).

you can't put one manucactur notebook and run it against another manucaftor. (asus and Acer) because they underclock to prolong battery. Acer uses the ATI recomended Clock and Mem (475 and 475) and Asus underclocks (apparently)

The x1600 is better - A 5672 or 5652 with an x1600 will be stronger than your 5652 with Geforce Go 7600.
