WoW was fun. i especially liked the shadow fang keep dungeon. i only played it to level 33, though.

but...comming from ffxi and WoW, i was looking for a more open-ended game and i ran into EVE.

until you can claim ("own") territory; build structures, loot your fallen opponents in open pvp, build an empire, and ulitimately have a chance to dictate and structure the game universe for others to play in, like you can in EVE, WoW just can't be a better game

oh, did i mention the 25k+ players on a single server cluster?

and i am sorry if i hijacked the thread

Yeah you did!!!!!!! Yes the video was for EVE. Pretty cool........but WoW does rule. But I will only know when i play EVE
post #10 of 15
Wait.. in eve you can somehow control the universe for other players? Anybody mind elaborating? I know squat about it.

I never played Eve, but this was an amazing read. Any game capable of this level of manipulation is pretty damn impressive.

that link looks like a promising read and seems accurate of the game;

i don't mind elaborating, but i am affraid this off-topic may need to go into another post because there is alot to say when explaining the game in order for someone to understand.

but real quick;

instead of having multiple servers (worlds) that you can join like WoW, the entire eve gameplay is based on a single server. meaning that whoever plays it must log on to the one and only server. hence, the large amounts of players playing at once. because of this, the eve universe is extremely large. there are i believe, 5,000 "zones" or "places" that you can travel to.

if you create a corporation (a guild in other words) and recruit enough players into it, you can go into a solar / star system and claim ownership of it by building outposts, star base structures that other players can dock in and interact with. you can run services in these stations like repair facilities, and collect taxes from people that use them. if you can manage to create a very powerfull corporation, you can control enough territory to enforce rules. such rules can be like, anyone that wants to mine the asteroid field in the star system must pay you a fee. or, maybe somone needs to pass through the star system to get to another star system but he notices that your corporation controls it and that the alliance / corporation that he belongs to is at war with yours or has negative standings. if he enters he most likely will be attacked by your corp members.

by claiming a piece of territory, i basically mean that you probably have to wage war against other corporations and alliances that may reside in that system in which they call home. of course, others can do this to you as well.

eve basically gives you the freedom to actually control the game world. of course, there are alot of other players / guilds / corporations that want to control the world, or as much of it as possible. but the possibilities are there. it is an open-ended game.

Boy they must have one hell of a server to support all the players. LLLLLAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!
post #15 of 15
quite the opposite lol. the EVE world is hosted on a cluster named Tranquility, not a single server. and it just got upgraded to 70 of these IBM Dual Processor 64-bit Opteron Blade Servers . they handle the job pretty good

and grats on the new lappy
