Error message

When first booting to Windows I am getting a strange error message about the msi70.tmp file not being readable and asking if I want to choose a program to read it or find one on the web. I have no clue what this is. I have searched my hard drive and can't find this file listed at all. I did a virus and spyware check and it comes out clean. Anyone know what this is?

Thanks in advance.

Try running "MSCONFIG" from the run menu and uncheck start up list to determine what program is generating the error. It's is most likely a 3rd party program that got delete from the hard drive but not from the start up list. Something to try.

Still can't get rid of the error message. Ran msconfig and deselected items. Also looked through registry. I did delete aol and netzero and I think that's about it so far. Everything seems to be working fine except seeing that error message which is irritating.

Also ran adaware and spybot and cleaned up a few trackers but that didn't help either.

It's part of MS InstallShield. You can locate the file in the following directory.

C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\1\MSI70.tmp

Next time you "Search" your hard drive, tell it to look inside hidden files and folders. It is there. You can delete the file. If msiexec needs it again in the future it can recreate the file. What's odd is this is usually part of InstallShield Pro software that let's you create your own installers.

Deleting that file should remove the error, if not... search for "msi70.tmp" in the registry and delete the key that calls for the file.

Thanks. I did search through hidden files and no luck. I did a registry search, too. I'll check that again though because I don't think I did a complete search...oooppss. Maybe that's were it is.

Revisiting this again because I still have the error message. I finally had time to really try to figure out what is causing this but have come up empty. I did a registry search and found reference to msi70 and deleted but the message still comes up. I also fooled with msconfig and turned off some startup processes but made no difference. If someone who has an E1705 could please do a registry search as well as a hard drive search and tell me where msi70 is located I would appreciate it. Don't worry about adding a file extension becuase I don't care about this right now. I just want to find any reference to msi70.

Thanks.

Just trying this again. Did a search on my work computer and no reference to msi70. Can anyone do an msi*.tmp or msi*.exe search and see what they come up with on their E1705. The only thing I have deleted on my notebook so far were netzero and aol.
