Brand New Duo Core 2ghz - slow with apps

Thread Starter
I just received a brand new laptop from Gateway: Nx560xl.
it's packed with 2ghz duo core 512 ram, 100gb 5400 rpm drive.

When I run CrystalCPUID it shows me that the average CPU speed is
just around 997 Mhz . and the dual core action kicks in to show 2ghz only when running a demanding program. Is this normal ?

The boot up time is long - about 50 seconds. To open Netscape it takes 10 sec.Adobe Reader takes 5 or longer . Seems to me like there is something wrong with this unit .This is my first laptop. It works slower then my 6 year old P4 1.8ghz computer. There is either a malfunction inside the system or it's set up in a way that it doesn't unleash it's full potential. BTW I'm running the factory settings.

Why does it take so long to open the applications up ?

What do you guys think ? Beacuse I'm thinking about sending it back where it came from .

Thanks for your suggestions.

Phil

Set the power options to always on. Then disable speedstep. Also do a fresh install of the OS Gateway/Dell/Compaq put a bunch of bloatware on your system that really slows it down.

Actually upping the total RAM to a gig would do wonders.

The speedstep thing is normal and vital to maintaining low heat levels when idle. RAM boost recommended. You're not going to get much less on the bootup speed, that's Windows. Processors never run at full power when Win loads anyway.

ram + hard drive are your bottlenecks as people have said

I was trying to help him with out making him go out and spend money.

LostPatrol my laptop has not gone up 1 Deg C with speedstep off.

check your hard drive DMA settings, and get rid of any useless startup programs

Win XP has a 260mb footprint. You need to at least plug in another 512 of ram, which wouldn't be horridly expensive.

i should be getting my dv8000t with a 2.0GHz Core Duo, 100GB 7200rpm drive, and 2.0GHz of 667MHz ram in about a week, Ill post startup times when I get it. Its running XP Pro if that makes a diff.
