Hard Drive Space

Thread Starter
I have an 80 GB hard drive, but when I looked on my hard drive space, I saw that I had about 73 GB originally left after a fresh install of the OS. Does the OS really take out 7 GB of hard drive space??

That's about right. Even when completely empty, Windows treats 1GB (1,024 megabytes) differently from the way hard drive manufacturers do (1,000 MB), so your usable capacity will be slightly lower than the listed capacity. Add to that the amount of space Windows takes up, and 73GB is about right.

Fresh Install..
Windows directory- around 1.4GB
Pagefile- 50% more than physical RAM, so with 512MB RAM the pagefile is 768MB.
Program Files - around 300MB.

Yep they are right!
Windows - 1.4-1.6 GB
Pagefile - aprox 768 MB
Also if you have hibernate activated thats = RAM = 1GB !!!
Programs - 300MB - 1GB dependeng what are you installing.
Also your HDD is not 80GB it's something like 78-79GB.
