mhx,
I think I ran across your review on another board. If you could would you please re-post it here?
In addition would you please
EXPAND on info on doing a "CLEAN" install of XP Pro!!!!.... re-posting that info here as well noting what issues someone may come up against in doing a clean install!!!!
I just ordered dv8000t which appears to be the same machine hardware /motherboard wise with a larger screen.
* Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo processor T2500 (2.0 GHz)
* 512MB DDR2 SDRAM (2x256MB)
* 100 GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive (Note: some people here have posted their dv8000t came with a 7,200 drive, wondering if this is indeed the case, and why current shipping units are coming with something else... If the 5,400 is not a "typo".
* LightScribe 8x DVD+/-RW&CD-RW Combo w/Double Layer
* 256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7400 -128 dedicated, up to 128 system
* Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network w/Bluetooth
* 17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1680x1050)
PS: Thanks for posting the link in that other thread/board? about the 2GB OCZ 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 533 (PC2 4200) and the review of such. (Price around $75 each, one with a $9.00 rebate, $4.81 shipping.)
I purposely did not upgrade the dv8000t's 512mb of installed ram, because I'd rather buy the ram from someone else for the amount HP was changing to "upgrade" from 512 to 2.0... especially since they (HP) would keep the (2) 256mb modules.... In effect me having to pay $275+/- for 1.5 ram..(LOL).
It was refreshing to see that the (2) 1 gig modules aren't going to cost anywhere near that :-) Shame that the rebate is only good for (1) ram module :-(
In addition to the above,
if you find any info /sources on hard drive upgrades, sources of info / bios updates, or "hacks" that allow the use of bigger hard drives once they become available OR info on a "custom/hacked" bios please do post that info as well.
(Assuming HP doesn't provide bios updates for larger hard drives.)
It's been my experience on some equipment that if it was not originally shipped with a certain hardware option, the mfg isn't going to bend over backwards, say a year and a half, two years from now on providing an updated bios that would support bigger drives, since after all they want you to buy a new machine every year, or two.
(I'm sorry sir but your machine only supports a 100gig size hard drive. Since we didn't sell that model with a 250/ 500 gig hard drive we aren't going to provide a bios update to allow the use of such a drive (even though the hardware will do it.), because we want you to buy a new machine... which does support the larger drive.)
Hope I'm wrong about the above, don't know... never had a HP laptop.. Maybe some long timer HP owners can chime in with some info on how HP does things???
PS: I build my own desktop PC's- the mfg's of the motherboards , video cards, etc of which DO provide such updates since they know for their boards, cards, etc to remain popular they must provide such bios updates, address issues that for the most part never affect a laptop since the hardware is "fixed", unlike a desktop machine.
Compared to the desktop guys, the laptop system builders have it made in the shade, since the hardware is "fixed"... I don't think it would be too much to ask for a bios upgrade to support a larger hard drive when they become available., do you?
