Heat

So, as some of you know I've been having a great time with my Aurora. Today I played eq2 = everquest 2 for 11 hours. I have a lapcool 4 on the bottom of my Aurora...but during about eh 5 hours into gameplay it was hot and I was feeling a slight more "lag" but hardly noticable. About another hour I get a towel and use an icepack and put it on the left hand side of the touchpad (it's where the lapcool can't reach and is hottest.) After an hour or so when it's cooled I take it off. It is avg. heat for a while and starts warming up in a few hours a lot again... This time though, my game crashes. I then reboot, start over and use the ice pack on it again..to late I suppose as it kicks me out of the game. I can get in but, I guess I just need to let my laptop cool down for a while. (I'm guessing overheating is causing these crashes.) Anyhow, just curious as to whether you guys felt it was heat as well that was causing the crashes and if you had any other idea's on how to keep this umm "oven" cooler. Thanks.

Errr, maybe having things cranked up for 11 hours straight has something to do with it? Jeepers creepers batman, how could you sit there for 11 hours straight (I assume with bio breaks) and play one game?? Maybe run 3d06 in a loop mode over night and see what that gives you.

Didn't some guy die for playing that long? Are you sure your gpu fan is working correctly? I've only ran for about 4 hours at one time and the gpu was hitting around 87c, not as hot as you are saying yours felt. Also moisture and electronic may not be the best route for cooling. Kidding aside you may not have a proper application of thermal interface material to your gpu. Download riva tuner and see what you are getting for temps on your graphics card.

I remember reading about a guy in Korea, but he played for like 38 hours straight...

While these things do get warm, they shouldn't get hot enough to cause shut downs. If I were you I'd contact tech support and go through your story with them. You shouldn't have to use an ice pack no matter how long you play.

Ill get search for riva tuner, and see how hot it's getting. Then will call AW as some of you are suggesting if I have some insane numbers. Thanks for all the help.

Hulioni, I don't see anything on Riva Tuner that shows me my temps.. is it there and I just don't see it?

Well I searched online and the notebook forums and found Everest. This program is excellent it seems. Temps... eh not so.

FieldValue
CPU57 °C (135 °F)
FieldValue
Hitachi HTS721010G9SA0044 °C (111 °F)

Those are high for not doing much yes? Gonna start gaming and see what happens. (Just want to make sure IT IS the heat and not eq2 thats messing up before I call AW.)

this one kid played for like 18 hours straight and then had like a stroke

Haha, those deaths arn't from gaming.. other probs. always involved unless they are to stupid to eat/sleep. Anyway... I just spent about 3 hours gaming and temps. are fine it seems:

FieldValue
CPU53 °C (127 °F)
FieldValue
Hitachi HTS721010G9SA0049 °C (120 °F)

That doesn't seem much different then old temps. I moved my lapcool 4 in a way to let in more air though and not sure if that is what fixed the problem... lapcool4 coulda been blocking air vents../shrug. I also did a 3dmark06 since I was already downloading crap on my computer.. My score was 4086 or close to that. I saw that Hulioni had over a 4,600 score...is that cause of overclocking alone? I would never do it, just curious. (I have latest drivers that an alienware can use as well.)

WolFox,

The temps you're looking at are the CPU and motherboard. There apparently isn't a probe for the GPU which is your graphics card. That is what is under the left palm rest that is getting so hot.

Your computer should not be getting so hot that it's uncomfortable to have your hand on the palm rest, and it should never get hot enough to shut down. You've either got a video card that's failing, or the heatsink isn't doing it's job.

Call tech support before something fries and your problem gets worse.

Is there no way to check my Graphics Card temp? I hear alot of people saying it gets hot in that area and no need to send back a working computer. It's not burning hot and I only assumed it was the card. I could be wrong as I am not a computer eh "nerd". It's warm yes, but not to the point I can't put my hand on it.. so any programs or anyway with EverRest to see my graphics card temp?

Back to Riva Tuner, it is the only program that I have used that will check the on die temp diode of the gpu. Here is what you do with pictures to show you.

First open rivatuner. Then click on the blinking tab circled in the picture below.

You will get a pop up about pugins, click the yes button. It should bring up the monitoring window and look something like this. Has core temp, voltage, core clocks, etc. Hope that helps and post back with your temps, I've seen as high as 90c on mine after about 3 hours of BF2 but my case was not hot to the touch.

that was a pair of 60+ korean dudes doing ddr for 2 days straight. (know bathroom breaks or nothin) the moment they stopped moving both men had heartattacks/strokes and died on the spot.

I remember hearing about it on the news a few months back, that is just insane to do that to yourself. Hell, after about an hour or so I usually have to get up and walk around a bit, maybe head to the fridge for another beer at least, lol. Didn't the deaths lead to some crack downs on the time they were allowed to play after that? Thought I heard something about that also shortly after.

Okay, think I found it.. Haha I was worried for nothing. I played for eh 6 hours today and temp. after ten min. trying to figure out how to find it is 61C. I'm just not used to the warmth it lets out. Thanks for all the help.

i don't use Lapcool or any cooling hardware for my aurora, i use a laptop stand. That way there is more air between the bottom of my laptop and what its sitting on. And this is after playing BF2 for 7 hours after work. Yea it sounds like i have no life, but when i came hime and got on my aurora to check my email. I decided to get some gaming done before bed, but the dam Aurora is just impossible to put down. I came home at 3AM and when i looked up it was 10am....but it only felt like 2 hours. I never had some much fun with my Desktop.

This thing with laptop coolers, is that even though they blow air into the laptop......the laptop is still sitting less than half an inch off the cooler or even less. But when you sit the laptop about 3-5 inches off the desk with a laptop stand that don't cover the vents at the bottom of the laptop, like i do.....i never have heat issues. I mean before i got the laptop stand from AW website, my Aurora would shutdown after 1 hour of play. But now i can play for 7+ hours and the laptop feels cold as ice.

The laptop coolers just blow air on one part of the laptop.

Cold as ice eh? I'm guessing your lying a bit there... i've never had a computer "cold as ice" nor cold in that matter. Anyway, that day that I had the shutdowns.. was do I think because my computer wasn't on the lapcool4 properly..I looked under my laptop and I noticed where the fans let out air were practically hitting the lapcool4. I then moved my laptop forward a little so the lapcool4 was more in the back and the "grips" held on to the lapcool4 so that the computer wasn't directly pushed down against it. EQ2 is very buggy sometimes though, so not sure if that was what it was.. Just noticed it was warmer then normal and was a lil worried, but this is my first laptop and not only that but a gaming laptop, so tis why I wanted to see my temps first before calling AW. r_#x4 I think laptop coolers are good, just need them fitting correctly, but stands are helpful to, they just don't push cool air on the laptop bottom.

getthermal does the job for me and allows me to set temp trip points, control fan speeds etc ... great app
