Done.

PS: If anyone else wishes to get a hold of this BIOS version as well, please feel free to PM (Private Message) me instead. Please include reference to your email address so that I can actually email you the BIOS file.

Another successful Turion installation

A huge thanks to Msantos for the Turion review and PM'ing the BIOS upgrade required. All went according to plan. No howling gale, wonderful!

Don't forget to download the AMD Turion driver for your OS. I hadn't done that intially and though the fan was running alot less than it was before transplant, the Turion driver for XP now means the fan doesn't cut in at all at idle. So even happier now!!

Thanks for the 2.04a bios update. I upgraded my bios and installed my Turion ML-44 without issue, however I am running Linux (Gentoo) and can not get the cpu to scale down. The fan is running non-stop. With the original CPU and old bios 1.05 i believe the scaling was working perfectly. I read back some and see this is a known issue. The exact error I get from dmesg:

Powernow-k8 BIOS error - no PSB or ACPI_PSS objects

It looks like Bios 2.04a is missing the AMD P-States to enable PowerNow!(cool&quite). I wonder if Eurocom would be able to get another updated bios that includes this for the Turion CPU's? If so then that would solve the windows issue as well with scaling.

Also it is worth noting that with the 2.04a bios and the original Clawhammer processor the scaling seems to work. Is it possible to use an earlier bios with the Turion?

Any Ideas?

In Windows, most of us have been using RMClock not only because it works very well but also because it allows some of us to run at a much lower power signature than what the default PStates allow.

I sugest you locate a Linux counterpart to the Windows RMClock util and try that instead. Eurocom has not indicated that it will address this issue since there are viable software work-arounds.

The earliest BIOS that will recognise a Turion is 2.02. The most suitable BIOS at the moment is still version 2.04a.

Abandoning your customers is bad business.

My main complaints about Sager:
Drivers page has old drivers, and has been mostly unmaintained.
- Video drivers are terrible, and the ATI site just tells you to get drivers from your laptop vendor. I had to try to find some elsewhere, and finaly got Omega drivers. Sager really sucked on this one.
- The wireless software (Gigabyte Client Utility) was also an old version and buggy. I had to go to another vendor's site and get a better version.
- No BIOS available on drivers page. What a pain to try to get it another way.
- My screen has smudgy-looking dark places, and I have cracks near the hinges, and the machine was hanging (I fixed that myself with a BIOS upgrade I got elsewhere). I contacted Sager and they said I could send it back for repair. But I RELY on this machine for my daily work. I CAN'T send it off for a couple of weeks! I live less than an hour from their main office too. They should offer a loaner machine. You should be able to swap your hard drive into the loaner and send your machine back to be fixed. When I had a Dell that had screen problems THEY CAME TO MY HOUSE and replaced the LCD.

So it's not like they are just now abandoning us on the BIOS issue. They haven't really been supporting their products in the past. Sure, if it dies, you can send it back and wait a week or two. That's what Sager thinks is service. THAT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH .
I totally agree!!! I have a off the self, comopusa cheap toshiba notebooks that has been in repair a half dozen times. Since I rely on my notebook for daily use, I thought I would break down a get a real one. So I spent 3 times the money my toshiba was, and researched what would be a great choice. I ended up with this Sager 4750 thru xotic pc. $3000 later I am in the same boat as my cheap toshiba sending this laptop back for the 3rd time now. I should have known after I received the sager, as it looked as if it was rushed through assemby, with the keyboard not installed right, (one of the corners was not down and locked in) the custom skin was not the one I had chosen, and extremely wrinkled and poor cuts to fit. Now this 4750 wont power up, and I have to send it back to Sager again, and dread the 1-3 week return of my notebook.
I would also like to know if I upgrade to the Turion will this kill my extended warranty with Sager? Glad I found this forum as you guys are extremely informative!!!

I believe that the extended warranty is not executed by Sager. This is actually one of the reasons why I proceeded with the upgrade. The upgrade is sactioned by Clevo and supported by several other vendors too. So, it is not an objectionable thing to do. In fact, this upgrade IS the BETTER thing to do especially if you want the machine to last longer and perform better with less downtime. The Clawhammer CPU is simply too hot and limiting to be in the D470K chassis for extended periods of time.

MSantos:
You are a great find. I just PM'd you for a bios upgrade.
I also have a couple of questions:
1. I am very interested in your CPU upgrade. Are there faster chips that run somewhat cooler than the original that also work? The fan noice reduction sounds appealing.
2. You mention overclocking. My current bios (1.04) doesn't have settings to change the clock. Is there a program to use to do the overclocking.

Hummm... so far the fastest chip I am aware of for the 754 format is the ML-44. All the turion 754's run cooler than the original clawhammer CPU's. In the end you pick the speed and price you want.

Yes, overclocking is a curiosity and I did not notice any significant advantages because the VIA chipset we have does not offer a divisor lock for the AGP and FSB buses- so you can only go so far with the CPU OC before the other subsystems begin to fail. The utility that allows for overclocking is called "CG-ICS950405.exe"... and it can be downloaded from the web. Overclocking via the BIOS setup is not a featured offered on our machines.

Where did you guys find your ML-44's? I'm finally ready to order and now they're nowhere to be found other than ebay. pricewatch.com doesn't list them other than in a notebook. I hope I didn't miss them.

Has any one tried the upgrade yet any with MT (25w) turions.

Some folks on this forum have actually succeeded in using MT processors in their D470K. I know at least some of the lower speed MT's work with the new BIOS. I am not sure about the higher speed ones.

Hi everyone!
First of all I'd like to big up this thread and specially msantos for his interest in this powerfull but buggy laptop. I'm another disapointed D470K customer I bought in Spain from Ahtec (spanish Clevo distributor). I've recently updated my bios to 2.04 but the UDMA mode 2 is giving me a headache now.
I couldn't find it anywhere on the web so could someone please send me a copy of the 2.04a bios to my email:

aeiros (at) gmail (dot) com

respect to y'all

If someone could send this off to me at dunarth (at) gmail (dot) com I would be much appreciative, I found the 2.04 update and am running into the UDMA2 issues, plu I bought my d470k from a place that's out of buisness now so can't get it from them .

Edit: Thank's Aeiros and that was really fast, you rock

Sent... wellcome to the d470k club

I just installed my own Turion ML-44 today, had a 3400+ that I feared would burn a hole in my desk if I left it there too long. Install was easy, I've already taken my d470k apart a few times to clean and such so was no problem. it's really nice to not hear the fan anymore

My results with Lockups and Linux - old 4750

I've got an old model 4750, Feb 2004. I run Linux on mine, and today I updated to 2.04 rom's because it's the best I could find w/o begging.

Since upgrading of course I've run into the udma2 issue, AND lockups.

Running linux I went the DOS update way, the floppy autoexec.bat doesn't backup your current, so that's lost, no going back to 1.04.

What I have noticed with the lockup issues is that with Linux it's causing kernel oops' while executing random code in userland, if you don't know Linux then what this means is that the lockup issues are hardware/bios only, no software is likely to keep them from locking up, nor should it have to.

The odd thing I've noticed is that I seem to be only getting the lockups while on battery power, when I'm plugged in I haven't gotten it yet, unplugged I'm lucky to last 10 mins.

I find it very annoying that Clevo hides their BIOS ROM's. If anyone can mail me 1.04, 1.05 and 2.04a that'd be great. At least I can go back then if 204a doesn't fix the lockups. Thanks
