Turion CPU upgrade - Sager 4750V (D470K) - Page 9

After updating from 2.04 to 2.04a I started getting all kinds of errors even while plugged in, so on mine I had to drop back to 1.05.

Some folks have been able to make those errors go away by re-setting the machine configuration (in the BIOS).

However...

Based on the feedback that I've gotten so far, it seems that the BIOS 2.04a only appears to be worth it for users who also upgrade to a Turion CPU. On average the BIOS version 1.05 appears to be the most stable for users who wish to retain their clawhammers.

Oh... again, just a quick reminder.

Machine lock-ups can often be caused by overheating conditions. One way to make sure that air is flowing well through the internal components is to remove any dust and debris that may have accumulated. Do it well, safely and regularly with a can of compressed air.

It is amazing how many stories abound in this forum extoling the benefits of keeping our machines clean.

re: HD Upgrade ...

Anybody out there with 120GB or 160GB harddisk inside this machine?
I have tried 160 GB Samsung (HM160JC), but it looks like the BIOS ends at 128GB. Have used both 1.05 and 2.04 BIOS. Any experiences appreciated ...

Update:
Win XP SP2 supports 48 bit LBA HD access (needed for HDs over 128GB), so the problem lies within the BIOS.
My normal HD drivers are Microsoft's VIA Bus-Master-Controller, dated 01. July 2001, version 5.1.2600.2180 (atapi.sys ?) -
I have also tried VIA's own PATA driver (via www.viaarena.com) v1.60A.
No differences, blue screen at boot with both versions.
Article ID for SP1 in MS' knowledgebase is 303013 (outdated with SP2).

Partition managers show the HD as 160GB, but even a 70GB primary partion was later not viewable for Win XP SP2 boot disk.

solution 1: BIOS update - not available ....
solution 2: OnTrack Disk Manager (I've used v10.46, which resulted in 2 floppy disks, bootable). Ontrack DM installed it's own driver (on an extra small primary partition at the end of the HD) that translates between the BIOS and the 160 GB HD. Works fine, recommended. No loss in HD performance.

So in the end, it was possible for run a 160 GB HD (with 3 parations under 80 GB, BTW) in the 470 AMD64 machine.

The thing that bugs me the most is the rip off going on this side of the pond. I have seen the turion for $290 from http://www.excaliberpc.com a few replies ago. In the uk the cheapest i can get it for is £255 or the equivalent of $472.079 USD

This makes me very mad

hmmm, i dont have experience with this sort of problem but i think you should be ok replacing the physical bios with another one (if that is possible), instead of replacing the whole motherboard.
it looks to me that you flashed the incorrect bios for this laptop. what version was it? and who gave it to you?

i think msantos might tell you what to do exactly. sorry for not being of much help.
good luck.

Sorry to hear about the mishap.

So what you are saying is that when you attempt to power up the notebook nothing happens. Right?

If so then the common solution I am aware of is to replace the mainboard.

There have been several cases where the reflashing with a saved BIOS caused the exact symptoms you describe. In all those cases, the mainboard had to be replaced. Sadly I am unaware of an *easy* alternate solution.

There have been folks who have replaced the mainboard on their own. You may find relevant posts in this forum with references to where they purchased the part.

I would recommend contacting the provider of the extended warranty (if you have one). If you don't have an extended warranty, then I would suggest contacting the vendor to enquire on the total cost to replace the mainboard.

MS, Thanks for all this info. I have the same laptop but with its original processor (3700), running FreeBSD (UNIX) and Windows Vista. My Bios versions is 2.02, but I would like to upgrade it since I have lots of problems with ACPI and other stuff.

1) What's the lastest BIOS UPDATE for this laptop? 2.04a?
2) Could you please send me a zip with this update to icerhank@gmail.com? (Please, it would help me a lot, it's very hard to find this bios update on the web)

Thanks, A LOT
-Nicolas.

D470K; 2GB PC3200; 2.04a Bios -> mobile 3700+
totally stable! waiting for mobile 4000+ to try out. this laptop is running so cool (with lots of extra customisedl boring holes underneath) that I hate to depart with it.

cheers ...

So this post is a little dated now. What's the optimal CPU for this chassis these days? (I was a little disappointed, as I was under the impression the NP4750V was a socket 939, not the 754). But anything would be an improvement on the jet engine cooling, especially when I'm sitting in the back of the classroom, and nobody can hear the professor...

Unless I am mistaken, the ML-44 remains the best processor for an upgrade (if you can still find one).
