DV1000t XP Pro Clean Install Error - Can't Find Hard Drive

Thread Starter
Hey everyone,

My mom just bought a brand new HP DV1000t from Costco.com and got it yesterday. It's loaded with XP Home and of course all the bloatware. I tried bringing over my full legit Volume License copy of Win XP Pro to do a clean install on her system. Unfortunately, after the XP Pro Disk does all of its initial setup scans, when you choose the option to do a clean install, it says Windows XP Pro can't find a working Hard Disk! WHHHAAAAT! I know there is one, cause it boots into XP Home fine. I also know the disk works, cause I've used it many times... so what is the deal? Is there something else I need to do? Do I need to pre-install a hard drive driver of some sort or change any settings in the BIOS? What am I missing?

Any and all help is TRULY appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Do you know if it uses a SATA drive or IDE drive? It sounds like you need to hit a button and insert the drive disk at the early step of Windows installation (just like installing on SCSI drive).

Maybe Sata?

Thanks for the quick reply. I was thinking the same thing as it might be a Sata drive, however I went to HP's site and there are no Hard Disk drivers listed under DV1000t. Would the drivers I need be listed elsewhere?

Thanks again!

DV1000T uses Intel mobile 945 express chipset. Check here for the SATA driver.

Fresh dv1000t (re)installation...

I ran into the same problem, after deciding to get rid of the stuff the notebook came preinstalled with. Of course those guys decided to play it "smart", not supplying ANY of the device drivers nor installed software titles on a separate disc! They are SAVING MONEY on us, thus giving us enough trouble to deal with.... More on that, later. Now, let me help you out work things around. Here's what you need to do: restart(with the XP Pro SP2 in the tray), hit F10 during boot-up(that'll bring you to the BIOS setup screen). Go to "System Configuration" tab and scroll down to "SATA Native Support". Then, DISABLE it! SAVE and EXIT setup and then everything should go fine.
I've had a really bad experience the last couple of days, after trying to do the same thing... Spent so much time on the phone w/tech support and customer service. Extreamly frustrating! First, nobody told me(us) they would not supply the device drivers, something that is unheard of! Sure I bought ALL unnecessary crap, that came preinstalled, but I didn't want to keep it.... very long story. I'm now waiting for the "Driver DVD", that I BOUGHT for $10, after having spent $1800!!! Pathetic story. Not only that, but now I found it takes 2 weeks(!!!) for them to supply it! Unbelieveable!!! .......
Now that I'm doing thing on my own, I found that not all of the drivers are supplied on their web site. Great, right?! There is only one exclamation mark left for me to solve, right next to "SM BUS CONTROLLER..." If any of you , guys can give me an idea where to get this one from, I would really appreciate it. Obviously, through the user forums one can get much better support and in timely manner. Thanks.
And if any of you knows how to get the SATA driver as well, that would be the cream of the crop

proffeecom,

ANY updates?.... Or are you still waiting on the drivers CD?

Did the above link help you out?

I think the SM Bus Controller is for the SmartMedia Card Reader. I'll let you know if I find it online.

For those of you who haven't taken off the original OS yet, there are programs that will backup all your drivers to a folder or a CD/DVD so that you'll have them after reformatting.
